The Stranger in black

The next morning, Ananya’s footage went viral. Her scream, the flickering lights, and the writing on the wall — it all spread online like wildfire. People called it fake, a publicity stunt. But those who watched till the end swore they saw something behind her. A tall, dark figure standing in the shadows just before the screen went black.

That same week, Aarav Malhotra arrived in town. Black jacket. Black bike. Black eyes that didn’t reveal a thing. He wasn’t there for the story — he was there for blood. Kabir Malhotra had been his elder brother. And someone — or something — had taken him inside that cursed house.

---

Ananya met him by chance — or maybe fate — at a local café while interviewing residents. He sat at the corner table, silent, nursing his black coffee, eyes fixed on her camera bag.

“You’re Ananya Rao,” he said, voice deep and steady. “The one who went inside the house.”

She frowned. “Yeah… and you are?”

He slid an old photograph across the table. In it were the five victims. “My brother,” he said. “Kabir.”

Ananya blinked. “You’re—”

“Yes. Aarav Malhotra. And you’re about to go back there, aren’t you?”

She didn’t answer. But he smirked — as if he already knew.

“Then I’m coming with you,” he said. “That house took everything from me. If there’s a ‘who’ behind it… we’ll find it together.”

---

That night, they returned. The wind howled like it was warning them to stop. Aarav carried a small metal box — something military-grade, with blinking lights.

“What’s that?” Ananya asked.

“Infrared field camera. Picks up movement that human eyes can’t,” he said, setting it up near the door.

Inside, the air was thick with silence. Dust danced in their flashlight beams. Ananya led them to the room where she found the diary. But this time, something was different — the walls were clean. The writing was gone.

Aarav crouched, touching the wood. “It’s been… scrubbed recently.”

“By who?” she whispered.

Before he could answer, the lights of his device blinked red — motion detected. Behind them.

---

They turned.

A figure stood halfway down the hallway.

Not moving. Not breathing. Just watching.

“Hello?” Ananya called, her voice trembling.

No response.

Aarav raised his flashlight. “Stay behind me.”

But as the beam hit the figure, it flickered — like static on an old TV. And then vanished.

Ananya gasped. “Where—where did it go?”

Aarav’s jaw tightened. “That wasn’t a ghost.”

She blinked. “Then what—”

He cut her off. “A projection. Someone’s using tech in this house. Someone alive.”

Her heart pounded. “You mean someone is still here?”

He met her gaze. “No. Someone never left.”

---

They followed faint footprints — muddy, leading into the basement. The deeper they went, the colder it got. Pipes dripped. The smell of metal and something rotten filled the air.

At the end of the corridor, a single chair stood facing the wall. On it lay a cassette tape labeled “PLAY ME.”

Aarav grabbed his portable player and pressed play.

Rhea’s voice came through — hoarse, trembling, but alive.

> “If you’re hearing this… it means the house found someone new. We thought it was haunted. It wasn’t. It was watching us, testing us. Every year, it needs one thing — a name. When you say your name out loud inside the house, you give it life. You let it choose you.”

Ananya’s breath caught. “I said my name,” she whispered.

Aarav turned to her slowly, eyes dark. “Then it’s already chosen you.”

The tape continued —

> “And if he’s there, tell him I’m sorry. Tell Aarav… I didn’t mean to call his name.”

Aarav’s face went pale. “What?”

The tape clicked off. Then, in the silence, came a voice from behind them — calm, cold, and eerily familiar.

> “You shouldn’t have come back, brother.”

They turned — and standing in the shadows was Kabir Malhotra.

---

But his eyes were not human anymore.

And when he smiled, both of them heard it — that same whisper that had started it all, echoing through the dark basement:

“Who?”
