Shadows of the Exile

Chapter 3: Shadows of the Exile

The grove faded behind them like a dream dissolving in dawn's light, but the night pressed on, the air growing heavier with the scent of impending rain, thunder rumbling in the distance like a god's muffled anger.

It was nearing 09:00 PM now, the moon a veiled spectator in the indigo sky of October 23, 2085, casting long shadows that stretched like accusing fingers across the path.

Tobi Adeyemi walked with a measured stride, his boots crunching over fallen leaves that released a crisp, earthy aroma, the iron domain tattoo on his arm throbbing with a steady heat that seeped into his muscles, making each step feel forged in fire.

Yusuf flanked him, the star-beast padding silently beside, its leather-like hide rustling softly, its golden eyes scanning the underbrush with a predator's vigilance, the growl in its throat a low vibration that Tobi felt in his bones.

Nneka trailed slightly, her gauntlets' hum a constant companion, but her steps faltered, her uli tattoos flickering erratically under her skin like dying embers in a forsaken hearth.

The battle with the iron deity had stirred something in her, a storm of memories that brewed behind her eyes, sorrow etching lines on her face that the twilight couldn't hide.

Tobi glanced back, his cool vibe softening at the sight—her shoulders slumped, breath coming in shallow puffs that fogged the cooling air. "Nneka, you dey alright? That iron ghost hit too close?"

She stopped, the gauntlets' light casting a blue glow on her features, highlighting the tears glistening at the corners of her eyes, salty trails that caught the moon's silver gleam. "Chai, Tobi... iron no be just metal. It be curse, reminder of what I lose."

Her voice cracked, a sorrowful melody that hung in the air like the distant thunder, pulling the group to a halt. Yusuf's beast whined softly, sensing the shift, its warm breath puffing against Tobi's leg.

The words spilled from her then, raw and unfiltered, as if the grove's silence demanded confession. Flashbacks wove through her tale like threads in a loom, vivid and piercing.

She spoke of her Igbo village, nestled in Arochukwu's hills, where the air always carried the sweet scent of palm wine and the rhythmic beat of ogbu drums during festivals. As a child, Nneka had been the curious one, her fingers always tinkering with old tech scavenged from the

Anya Oju ruins, her uli tattoos inked early as a mark of her clan's priestess lineage. "We worship Alusi, bind spirits to protect the gates," she said, her voice trembling, the memory's sorrow wrapping around her like a chill wind. "But I wan do more—hack the juju, make it stronger against the envy leaks."

The battle that defined her exile unfolded in her words, sorrow deepening with each detail. It was a night much like this, the moon full and mocking, when a lesser gate spirit a water Alusi with eyes like swirling pools escaped its bindings during a ritual she led.

The air had turned cold then, mist rising like vengeful ghosts, the scent of river mud overwhelming as the spirit flooded the village shrine. Nneka's hands shook in the telling, her gauntlets clenching as if reliving the grip on her tools.

"I try bind it with my hacks uli code to trap its emi—but iron curse interfere. An old relic, iron from a fallen Ogun-echo, twist the ritual. The spirit rage, drown my brother in its waters, his screams bubbling like air trapped in mud."

Tears streamed freely now, hot on her cheeks, the sorrow a tangible weight that bowed her head, her breath hitching like a drumbeat broken.

The clan elders had blamed her exiled her under the moon's indifferent gaze, the firelight of their torches flickering on her back as she walked away, the scent of burning incense clinging to her like guilt.

"They say I tempt Chukwu's wrath, bring curse on the bloodline. Now, I wander, hack to survive, but every gate remind me of what I lose family, home, my brother's laugh echoing in the water's roar."

Yusuf placed a hand on her shoulder, firm and warm, his voice a soothing rumble.

"Kai, sister, curses break with courage. My Zarina pact teach me that beasts whisper of redemption in the stars."

But before comfort could take root, the growl returned—louder, multiplied. From the shadows erupted a pack of corrupted beasts, lesser

Alusi-twisted hyenas infused with Zuciya Kishi envy, their fur matted with dark tendrils that reeked of rot and malice, eyes glowing green like poisoned emeralds.

The air filled with their snarls, a cacophony that drowned the thunder, their claws scraping the earth in sparks.

"Wahala double!" Tobi shouted, Emi-Ogún surging as the Crest flared, threads whipping out in obsidian arcs. The pack lunged, and the battle ignited—sorrow fueling Nneka's fury.

She hacked a barrier, her gauntlets sparking with uli fire that singed the air, warm bursts of light illuminating the fray.

Tobi weaved threads to bind a hyena's soul, the lesser creature's emi caging in a spectral prison that shattered in a burst of green mist, its rot-scent dissipating in the wind.

Yusuf's star-beast roared, charging with golden aura that cracked bones, the impact a thunderous thud that shook leaves from trees.

Nneka dove into the thick, her sorrow turning to rage, gauntlets projecting blades of code that sliced a beast's hide, the air filling with the sizzle of envy tendrils burning away.

"For my brother!" she cried, her voice breaking, tears mixing with sweat as she bound a lesser soul with her hacks, the creature dissolving in a wail that echoed her exile's pain.

The fight was sorrowful chaos beasts' blood hot and sticky on the ground, the scent of rot clashing with the fresh rain that began to fall, pattering on leaves like tears from the sky.

As the last beast fell, Nneka collapsed to her knees, the rain washing her face clean, sorrow spent but not gone. Tobi helped her up, his touch gentle, the Crest's warmth sharing a silent bond.

"We break curses together," he said, his voice soft as the rain's whisper.

Yusuf nodded, the star-beast nuzzling his side. "The whispers speak of a stargazer Zara, her visions light the path. But envy hunts us now."

The night deepened, the rain a veil for their wounds, the war of souls forging bonds in fire and tears.
