Chapter 4: Midnight Recording
The studio was almost deserted when Taehyung and Jungkook entered. The other members had left hours earlier, but the gentle buzz of the mixing boards still resonated in the air, like a heartbeat that wouldn't fade. The clock read 12:47 a.m. — another night that was just for them.
Jungkook dropped his backpack and stretched. “We’re going to regret this tomorrow,” he said.
Taehyung gave a faint smile as he adjusted the microphone stand. “Probably, but we’ll create something beautiful.”
They were working on a track that was still in progress — a soft ballad Taehyung had composed after looking through Jungkook’s notebook of song ideas. Initially intended as just another duet, every lyric began to feel like a heartfelt confession.
Taehyung put on the headphones and started humming the first verse while Jungkook watched from the soundproof booth. His voice was calm and deep, filling the quiet space. Jungkook had heard Taehyung sing countless times, but there was something unique about hearing him alone at night — it felt as if the music came directly from his heart.
When Taehyung finished, he signaled for Jungkook to join him in the booth. “Your turn.”
Jungkook hesitated. “You go first, hyung. I’m still trying to match your tone.”
Taehyung chuckled. “You always say that, and then you sound better than me.”
“I don’t,” Jungkook replied quietly, looking down.
Taehyung adjusted Jungkook’s microphone, their hands brushing against each other, causing Jungkook to freeze.
“You do,” Taehyung said softly, meeting his gaze. “But it’s not a competition. This song needs you to feel it, not just perfect it.”
Jungkook looked into Taehyung's eyes and saw something he couldn't quite define — a steady warmth and unwavering belief. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and began to sing.
> In the noise, you found me,
In the dark, you taught me light.
His voice wavered initially, but Taehyung quietly joined in, their voices merging into one line that felt like home. Jungkook relaxed, each note carrying their shared history — every late-night conversation, every secret laugh, every moment when words fell short.
When the song ended, silence enveloped them, heavy and delicate. Jungkook sighed and removed his headphones. “It still doesn’t feel right,” he murmured.
Taehyung tilted his head. “What doesn’t?”
“The ending. It feels incomplete.”
Taehyung pondered for a moment and then sat beside him on the small studio couch. “Maybe the ending isn’t meant to be perfect yet.”
Jungkook sighed, rubbing his palms together. “Sometimes I feel like I can’t keep up with you. You always know what to say, how to sound, how to carry yourself. I just… follow.”
Taehyung smiled gently. “You don’t just follow, Jungkook. You lead with your heart. That’s harder.”
Jungkook looked up, surprised by the certainty in his voice. “You really think so?”
Taehyung nodded. “Every time you sing, people listen. Not because you’re flawless — but because you mean every word.”
Something inside Jungkook softened at that. He didn’t respond immediately; instead, he leaned back, allowing his shoulder to rest lightly against Taehyung’s. It was unplanned, but Taehyung didn’t pull away. He stayed there, steady and quiet, letting Jungkook breathe.
Minutes passed in that shared silence — the hum of the equipment, the soft glow of the monitors, the warmth of two people simply being together.
“Hyung,” Jungkook finally whispered, “why do you always look out for me?”
Taehyung smiled faintly. “Because someone has to make sure you don’t get lost in your own thoughts.”
Jungkook’s gaze softened. “And who looks out for you?”
Taehyung’s eyes fell on the empty lyric sheets on the table. “Maybe you do,” he replied quietly. “Even when you don’t realize it.”
The words struck Jungkook more deeply than he anticipated. He turned to study Taehyung’s face — the calm eyes, the small, tired smile.
In that moment, Taehyung seemed less like the confident performer who could captivate millions and more like someone real and human. Jungkook felt a strong desire to protect that side of him as well.
“Let’s finish the song,” Jungkook said softly.
Taehyung nodded, his voice steady once more. “Together.”
They stood side by side and recorded the final chorus, their voices intertwining like threads of light. When the last note faded, Jungkook turned to see Taehyung already looking at him.
Taehyung reached out, brushing a stray hair from Jungkook’s forehead. “Perfect,” he said.
Jungkook smiled, his heart racing. “Because you were here.”
Taehyung didn’t respond. He just held Jungkook’s gaze for a moment longer — a quiet promise in his eyes — before pressing the button to replay the track.
Their voices filled the room again, soft and endless, echoing through the midnight stillness like a secret they no longer needed to hide.
