The Voice That Echoes

The final week of the semester arrived. The air buzzed with exam stress, laughter, and the smell of coffee from the campus café. For Hita, it felt like walking through a familiar place wearing a new heart.

She was no longer invisible

People didn’t whisper as much now, they noticed her not for what she did for others but for who she was

Still, something unfinished lingered inside her, a quiet tension between her and Mira

The day of the art presentation came. Their group stood before the class, project ready. Hita had designed most of it while Mira wrote the opening speech

When Mira spoke, her voice trembled slightly. The confidence that once filled the room seemed to fade. She glanced at Hita, then looked down

After the applause, as everyone packed up, Mira walked over

“Hey, Hita”

Hita turned. “Yeah?”

“I just wanted to say… thanks. You didn’t have to finish the project after everything. I might’ve been a jerk before”

Hita blinked, surprised. For the first time, Mira sounded sincere

“You weren’t kind of a jerk,” Hita said softly. “You were a jerk”

Mira’s eyes widened, then she laughed

“Yeah, I deserved that”

For a moment, they both smiled, not as enemies or users but as two people finally being honest

“No hard feelings?” Mira asked

“No,” Hita said. “Just no more using people”

“Deal” Mira smiled before walking away

Later that afternoon, Hita sat on the rooftop garden watching the clouds drift across the sky. The city moved quietly below. She heard footsteps behind her

“Figured I’d find you here” Reyan said, sitting beside her

She smiled. “You always do”

They sat in silence, the wind brushing gently through the air. The warmth of the sun rested on their shoulders

“So,” Reyan said, “semester’s ending. You planning anything for break?”

“Just going home” Hita said. “I think I need time to breathe, and maybe start drawing again, for myself this time”

“You should” he said. “You’ve got something rare, not just talent but courage to start over”

Hita looked at him. “I didn’t do it alone”

Reyan smiled. “Didn’t say you did. But you were the one who took the step”

The quiet between them stretched, calm and peaceful. She wasn’t nervous anymore. She felt light

“Reyan?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you, for noticing me when no one else did”

He smiled, eyes warm. “You made it easy to notice you, once you stopped hiding”

Their hands brushed slightly, a small touch that neither pulled away from. Hita’s heart fluttered, full of warmth

Maybe this is what courage feels like, she thought. Not loud or dramatic, just peaceful

As the sun dipped low, painting the world in gold, Hita stood up, hair moving in the soft breeze. She felt lighter than ever before, like the weight she carried for years had finally gone

“Let’s go,” she said. “There’s still a world waiting”

Reyan smiled. “Lead the way, brave girl”

They walked down the stairs together, laughter echoing softly between them, and for the first time, Hita’s voice no longer trembled. It carried strength that would stay forever
