Chapter 2 – Echoes of Everyday Light

“Some people walk back into your life as gently as sunlight through curtains—

not to blind you, just to show that morning still exists.”

...----------------...

The morning after the rain smelled clean, like new notebooks and freshly brewed tea.

Sang Zhi woke to the sound of her brother rummaging through the kitchen, every cupboard opening twice.

She rolled over, half-asleep. “You’re loud.”

“Your stomach’s louder,” Sang Yan answered. “I made congee. Jiaxu might drop by; I told him we’d grab breakfast together.”

Her drowsiness scattered. “Why?”

“Because he’s a friend. You act like I invited a criminal.”

She hid beneath the blanket, voice muffled. “You didn’t even ask me.”

“You don’t need an invitation to eat, Zhi Zhi.”

The blanket didn’t hide her smile. Zhi Zhi. He hadn’t called her that since high school. Maybe the rain had softened everyone a little.

Sang Zhi

When Duan Jiaxu arrived, sunlight followed him in. The same casual smile, the same steady quiet that made rooms seem smaller somehow.

He set down a bag of pastries. “Peace offering. Your brother’s cooking looks like an experiment.”

Sang Yan threw a towel at him. “Don’t insult the chef.”

Sang Zhi laughed before she could stop herself. The sound drew Jiaxu’s eyes—just briefly—but long enough to remind her of every summer evening he’d spent tutoring her at that same dining table.

He asked about her studies, her new campus, the city up north. His tone was gentle, never prying, but she caught the flicker of surprise when she answered confidently.

She wasn’t a kid anymore, and he seemed to be realizing it one question at a time.

Half an hour later, Sang Yan left to take a call, leaving them with silence thick enough to taste.

Jiaxu glanced toward the balcony. “Still keeping the plants alive?”

“They keep me alive,” she said, then regretted the honesty.

He smiled, soft. “I believe that.”

Outside, a sparrow landed on the railing, shaking droplets from its wings. For a moment they both looked at it instead of each other.

Duan Jiaxu

He hadn’t meant to stay this long. But something about the apartment—its mix of laughter and old photographs—made him linger.

He noticed the new picture frames: Sang Zhi at her graduation, Sang Yan pretending to be annoyed beside her.

Time really did move quietly here.

When Sang Yan came back, Jiaxu stood. “I should get going.”

“Already?” Sang Yan asked.

“I’ve got a meeting downtown.” He looked at Sang Zhi once more. “See you around?”

Her fingers twisted the edge of her sleeve. “Sure. Around.”

Wen Yifan

Across town, Wen Yifan wiped the café counter, pretending not to check her phone. Sang Yan was late, naturally.

When he finally arrived, dripping rainwater from his umbrella, she felt the old rhythm of irritation and fondness fall perfectly back into place.

“Still dramatic,” she said.

“Still sarcastic,” he replied.

They sat by the window, the city half-blurred outside.

Their talk drifted from work to old classmates, to the tiny radio show she’d started. He teased her about sounding too serious on air; she accused him of still being allergic to commitment.

But beneath every line of humor was something unspoken—We could have been more. We might still be.

When the rain lightened, he offered to walk her to the station. She refused twice, accepted the third time.
