Chapter 4

EVE

After the incident, I stayed inside Roxanne's room, and sat there as if time somehow stopped itself from ticking. I was so lost in thought that I didn't realize Roxanne came into the room until she placed her hand on my shoulder and offered me a glass of water. “Thanks” I murmured to her, as I looked up at her emerald green eyes, I saw a pang of guilt and care. This wasn’t the Roxanne I knew, for the first time I didn't see her as the person who led the students but the person who jumped in the pool to save me.

“Rox, I'm fine-” I tried to reassure her to stop worrying about me, I didn't want anyone to pity me for not being able to swim. ”No, you’re not!” she said, her voice sharp and I could feel the hint of emotion in it—concern, fear, or was it something else I couldn't put my finger on but with that out of the way I could also feel her body shaking from the thought of me drowning. “You were drowning...” she said her voice shaking from the incident, as our gaze met, I saw her in tears.

“Rox-, it wasn't your fault, you don't have to cry, it was my fault… for staying close to the pool, for not telling you beforehand that I couldn't swim”. This was the first time I saw Roxanne actually crying. I then placed my hand on her cheeks and caressed them, reassuring her in her vulnerable state. I then pulled her into a hug and wiped her tears.

After a while, I finally got her to stop crying and we decided to watch a movie to lighten the mood in the room that I swear could cut through glass. “You know Roxy, this is the best sleepover I have had in a long time, except the drowning of course” I said, cutting the silence between us. “I'm glad you like it, but seriously though, Eve, are you sure, you're fine? Like you know we can just call it a night and go home-” I then yelped, “Why did I encourage her to play ‘The Conjuring', this is terrifying I thought to myself, I instinctively cuddled up with her. “You sure you don't want me to change it?” She asked me with concern in her voice.

“Yeah, change it... it's too scary for me.” With that she decided to change it to ‘How to make millions before grandma dies’.

Not even half into the film, I was talking to her but when I looked up at her, she was already asleep her head on mine and I then smiled softly before turning off the film and tucking her in bed but then I heard her murmur in her sleep “don't go… stay here.” A soft smile then crept up on my lips and I decided to tuck myself beside her. “Don't worry I'm not going anywhere” I then closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.

After a few hours of sleep, Roxanne started to wake up because of the warm heat of Eve’s body, which startled Roxanne forcing her to be wide awake.

As Eve started waking up, she saw Roxanne looking at her, “Good morning, how long have you been staring at me for?” I smirked, teasing her. “Just a few minutes, like a minute, plus I was just- just wondering why you slept beside me and not in your sleeping bag.” Roxanne said, her gaze now away from me and she slowly got up. “Relax, you were murmuring in your sleep that you wanted me to stay beside you, so I did”. I then got up and stretched my muscles before Roxanne's maid, Hannah, came in and called us down for breakfast.

“Good morning Hannah, where's father?” Roxanne asked as we were going down the stairs. “Your father left home early for a business trip, he will be back next week” Hannah said while pouring water into our cups. Once she finished pouring water she went to the kitchen.

“Hey… Roxy… I know, you don't want me talking about last night and the pool incident but like… I have to tell you something” I shifted on my seat uncomfortably as she looked up from her phone to look at me. “Yeah, what about it?” Roxanne said,her attention now fully on me.

I then told her about what happened from my perspective from who threw me in to why I blacked out in the water.

As I finished explaining the incident to her, I could sense her blood boiling and Roxanne just tried to hide it with a smile but I could sense her anger bubbling inside…
