The Locked Room

The mansion was quieter than usual that evening. Rain had returned, drumming softly on the windows, a muted rhythm that echoed through the grand halls. Yasmeen wandered through the corridors, her small hands brushing against the cold walls. She wasn’t sure why she was awake; sleep had abandoned her. Something in the house felt… strange tonight.

Her tiny feet carried her past the dining room, past the portraits of ancestors she didn’t recognize, and toward a door that had always been closed. It was larger than the others, made of dark wood with intricate carvings, and a golden lock glimmered faintly in the dim light. She stopped. Her heart thumped.

“Off-limits,” Soobin had said.

But why did it feel like the door was calling her? Like a whisper she could almost hear? She glanced around — the hall was empty, the staff nowhere in sight. The mansion seemed to hold its breath.

Yasmeen’s small fingers reached for the lock. It was cold, heavier than she expected, but something inside her urged her on. A tiny click echoed in the silent corridor as she nudged the door, and it slowly creaked open.

The room inside was unlike anything she had seen before. Candlelight flickered from tall sconces along the walls, illuminating an old study filled with books, portraits, and objects that seemed ancient — centuries old. Dust hung in the air like tiny stars, disturbed only by the soft gust of the rainy night.

Then her eyes caught it. A portrait on the far wall — a girl in a long, flowing white dress, her hair soft and dark like Yasmeen’s, her eyes staring straight at her. Her lips curved in a small, sad smile. Yasmeen’s heart raced.

She stepped closer, her fingers brushing the edge of the frame. A strange warmth flooded her chest, and for a moment, the room spun around her. She felt… familiar with this girl. As if she had known her for years.

A soft sound behind her made her spin.

Soobin stood in the doorway, tall and menacing, his dark eyes fixed on her. His usual calmness was replaced by a flicker of something else — anger, fear, maybe even… panic.

“You… what are you doing here?” His voice was low, dangerous, yet unsteady.

“I-I… I just wanted to see…” Yasmeen’s words trembled. “It… it’s so pretty, and the girl… she looks like me…”

“Don’t touch anything!” he snapped, stepping forward. His long coat swished against the floor as he moved. “This room is forbidden for a reason. Do you understand?”

Yasmeen bit her lip, clutching her hands to her chest. “I-I’m sorry… I just… I didn’t know…”

He froze for a second, his eyes flicking toward the portrait. There was a tension in his shoulders, a sharpness in his jaw. He wanted to yell, to push her away, but something held him back. His voice softened, barely above a whisper.

“Go back to your room. Now.”

Yasmeen nodded quickly, tears brimming in her eyes. She turned, her small feet hurrying back through the hall. Behind her, the door clicked shut, leaving Soobin alone with the flickering candlelight and memories that should have remained buried.

He moved closer to the portrait, his hand hovering over it, but not touching. The girl in the painting — she had been his. A lifetime ago, her soul had been his light, her laughter his warmth, and yet… he had lost her.

A cold wind swept through the room, even though the windows were closed. Soobin shivered slightly. Not from the cold, but from the weight of centuries pressing down on him. He had seen her reincarnate, over and over, yet always with this same innocence, this same delicate bravery. And every time, he had been powerless to protect her.

Meanwhile, Yasmeen lay in her small bed, hugging her pillow tightly. Sleep refused her again, and images of the painting swirled in her mind. Why did it feel so familiar? Why did her heart ache so deeply when she thought of the girl’s sad smile?

A sudden whisper from the hall made her sit up. The candlelight from the study flickered across the corridor, and she saw a shadow — tall, still, unblinking. Soobin.

“I told you not to go there,” he said softly, his voice carrying a strange weight tonight. “It’s dangerous… not for me, but for you.”

Yasmeen swallowed. “I… I just wanted to see…”

“You should never open doors that aren’t meant for you,” he said, stepping closer. But this time, his expression was unreadable, conflicted. Anger, fear, something else… a flicker of sorrow. “Promise me… promise me you’ll never go near that room again.”

“I… I promise,” she whispered, her voice small.

He nodded once, sharply, then turned and walked away. Yasmeen watched him disappear, her mind spinning. She didn’t understand why she felt both terrified and safe at the same time. Something about him… it wasn’t just fear. There was… history. A weight she couldn’t name.

That night, she dreamed.

A cold castle under a moonlit sky. A girl in white laughing in a garden full of night flowers. A man with dark hair and piercing eyes — the same eyes that haunted her now — watching her from the shadows. He reached out, and she reached back, but before their hands could touch, the world shattered into black.

She woke with a start, her small hands trembling. The mansion was silent. Rain still tapped the windows, but now it sounded like a warning. Something ancient, something waiting, was stirring in this house.

Upstairs, Soobin stood by the window, staring at the dark clouds. He whispered to himself, “She doesn’t remember… but she will. She always does.”

For the first time in years, the distance between them felt unbearable. The room, the mansion, the world — nothing could separate the past from the present now. And Yasmeen’s innocence… it was more dangerous than any weapon he had ever held.

Because she wasn’t just a child. She was his past. His future. And the key to a secret that had lasted centuries.

The night stretched on, heavy and full of unspoken truths. Somewhere deep inside, both of them were awake — one with fear, one with memory, one with love, and one with a curse that refused to break.

And the mansion, ancient and secretive, seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the next step.
