Dorm Room Rivals
*Chapter 1: First Day, First Clash*
The gates of North Ridge Boarding Academy stood tall and pristine under the morning sun, gleaming like the start of something big. Emily Carter adjusted the strap on her duffel bag, staring up at the school she’d only seen in brochures and YouTube videos. This was it. Her first day at one of the most competitive boarding schools in the state—a place known for its academic prestige, diverse student body, and fierce student rivalries.
She wasn’t nervous. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself.
“Dorm 4B,” she whispered, reading off the room number on the envelope clutched in her hand. It was supposed to be an all-girls dorm. She headed across the campus, passing groups of students laughing, dragging their suitcases, and shouting greetings across the quad. Her footsteps quickened as anticipation swirled in her chest.
Inside the dorm building, the scent of fresh paint and disinfectant lingered in the air. She found the door to Room 207, unlocked it, and pushed it open with a smile—only to freeze in the doorway.
There was already someone in the room.
He was tall, lean, and clearly not expecting her. His dark hair was tousled, and he stood shirtless, halfway through unpacking. His headphones dangled from his ears, and his head snapped toward the door at her arrival.
Emily blinked. He blinked back.
“…Are you lost?” he asked, his voice edged with sarcasm.
“I—I think you are,” she retorted, holding up her envelope. “This is Room 207. Girls' dorm.”
He frowned and walked over to the desk where his own packet sat. “This says Room 207 too. And I was told this is a co-ed dorm section.”
“Co-ed?” she echoed, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks.
“Yeah. New policy, apparently,” he said with a shrug, then offered a smirk. “Didn’t think it’d start with me, though.”
Emily stepped inside, trying to process it. “This has to be a mistake.”
“I mean, unless you're planning to transfer out on day one, I guess we’re roommates,” he said, moving back to his bed without another word. “I’m Kai, by the way.”
Emily didn’t respond. She marched back down to the office, arguing for a room reassignment—but the receptionist only offered an apologetic smile.
“There’s been a room reshuffle due to renovations,” she explained. “It’s temporary, and the co-ed rooms have supervisors on the floor at all times.”
“Still—he’s a guy!” Emily protested.
“We understand, but all students were informed. You’re in an honors wing. It was noted on your acceptance package.”
Emily didn’t remember that.
Back in Room 207, Kai had already claimed the window bed and set up his side with annoyingly precise organization—books in stacks, laptop charging, a poster of some rock band already tacked to the wall. She gritted her teeth and dumped her bag on the other bed.
“I like the silence,” he said casually.
“What?” she turned to him.
“Just letting you know. I like quiet, no late-night calls, and no mess.”
Emily raised a brow. “Are you always this charming?”
He smirked. “Only when someone barges into my dorm room unannounced.”
“Oh please,” she huffed. “This is *my* room too.”
They stared at each other, a silent agreement forming: this wasn’t going to be easy.
Later that evening, after a welcome orientation, the floor gathered in the common room for introductions. Kai barely paid attention, arms crossed, leaning against a wall. Emily, meanwhile, tried to be polite, offering smiles to other girls and exchanging phone numbers. But her eyes kept darting to him.
There was something about him that annoyed her—his confidence, the way he didn’t seem fazed by anything, how he just *fit in* without even trying.
As they returned to their room, she finally asked, “Why are you here?”
He glanced at her. “Same reason you are. Scholarships. Honors program. Competitive resume.”
“You don’t look like someone who takes school seriously.”
“You don’t look like someone who judges people this quickly,” he said without missing a beat.
Emily scoffed, turning away.
As lights dimmed and they both settled into their separate beds, the tension still hung in the air.
She didn’t know how long this arrangement would last. But one thing was certain—this year was going to be more complicated than she thought.
