Megh stood frozen, her ears ringing with her aunt’s words.
She couldn’t understand what crime she had committed to deserve such venom.
As she took a hesitant step toward Mehul, Dilara Begum blocked her way, her face twisted with rage.
Mehul cried out from behind, voice trembling,
> “Mami ( Aunty), please — listen to Megh once!
I know my sister. She can never do anything wrong!”
Tears shimmered in Megh’s eyes as she looked up at her aunt.
> “Mami, what did I do? Tell me, please!
Why are you treating me like this?
I swear, I’ve done nothing wrong. Believe me!”
And then she told everything — the entire night’s nightmare, from the ambush to Dr. Kim saving her life.
But instead of calming down, Dilara Begum exploded like wildfire.
Her voice cut through the air, sharp and humiliating.
> “Do you think I’m fool enough to believe such stories?
I wasn’t born yesterday! You think I can’t see what you’ve done?
Look at the way you’re limping — spent the night satisfying your lust, didn’t you?”
The words struck like knives. Megh gasped in disbelief.
> “Mami! Shame on you! You’re saying this to me?
You’ve always been like a mother to us — could you ever say such words to your own daughter, Arshi?”
But Dilara’s hand flew faster than her thoughts.
SLAP!
> “Don’t you dare utter my daughter’s name with that filthy mouth!” she shouted.
“My daughter would never spend a night outside with a strange man like you did!”
Mehul broke into sobs.
> “Mami, she didn’t come home last night. Mama (uncle) couldn’t sleep — he worried all night, and before dawn… he had a heart attack!
Badhan took him to the hospital!
Everyone in the neighborhood is gossiping, saying horrible things about Megh.
Her phone was off! We called Borshan Ohona — they looked everywhere!”
Megh’s heart sank. Her chest burned with guilt.
But Dilara wasn’t done. Her rage turned poisonous.
> “You devoured your own parents when you were young — now you want to kill my husband too?!”
She shoved Megh to the ground.
The neighbors watched — smirking, whispering, enjoying the spectacle of her humiliation.
From the corner, a few local thugs laughed crudely.
> “If she wanted fun so bad, she could’ve called us. We wouldn’t mind a turn!”
Megh looked at them with eyes that burned — but tears drowned the fire.
Dilara kicked her away.
> “Don’t touch me with your filthy hands!”
Through all this, Dr. Kim stood silently, not understanding the words — but sensing every ounce of tension.
He saw the trembling girl, the jeering crowd, the cruelty in their eyes.
And when Dilara shoved Megh again, he stepped forward at last.
> “What’s going on here?” he demanded in English, his voice calm but commanding.
Megh quickly stood up.
> “It’s nothing, please,” she pleaded softly. “You should go.”
But before she could say more, Dilara turned on him like a storm.
> “Oh! So this is your client? The foreigner you spent the night with?!”
Megh cried out,
> “Mami, please! Don’t say such things — even hearing them is a sin!”
> “A sin?” Dilara scoffed. “You committed it, and now my words are the problem?”
Dr. Kim frowned, confused.
> “Please, someone tell me — what’s happening? Is she in some kind of trouble?”
Megh lowered her head, unable to answer.
Dilara turned to the gathered crowd, her voice rising, filled with fake sorrow:
> “This is what I get for raising someone else’s child!
I took her in like my own, and she repays me by destroying my family’s honor!”
Then, dripping with sarcasm,
> “If she wanted a man that bad, she could’ve told me. I’d have arranged a proper marriage!
Instead, she went and blackened our faces in front of everyone!”
She glared at Mehul.
> “Because of her, your marriage won’t happen — and neither will Arshi’s! This cursed girl has doomed us all!”
Megh cried out desperately,
> “Mami, please, it’s not what you think! Believe me!”
She turned to her sister,
> “Apu (elder sister), you trust me, don’t you?”
Mehul wept and nodded, clutching her sister’s hand.
> “I might doubt myself someday, but never you. I know you can never do something so wrong.”
Just then, Borshan appeared.
His eyes were bloodshot, his expression unreadable.
When he looked at Megh — it wasn’t love. It was pain. Betrayal.
He stepped forward and pulled her into a desperate embrace.
> “Where were you, Megh? I was losing my mind!
Do you know how I searched for you all night?”
The crowd murmured. Everyone knew about their relationship.
No one dared stop the influential leader’s son.
But Dilara smirked cruelly.
> “Oh Borshan, you poor fool. You worried for her all night — while she was busy with her foreign lover!
And now she brings him home too!”
Borshan froze, turning to Megh in disbelief.
> “Mami, that’s not true… right?”
> “Ask the neighbors!” Dilara snapped. “They all saw her! She’s ruined us!”
Ohona, who had just arrived, stared in shock — more at Dilara’s words than at Dr. Kim’s presence.
Borshan clenched his fists.
He turned to Megh, his voice trembling.
> “Megh, answer me honestly. I’ll only ask once.
Is what Mami said true?
Were you… with him last night?”
Megh’s lips quivered.
> “Yes… I was. But Borshan—”
SLAP!
The sound shattered her world.
Megh touched her burning cheek, stunned.
Her eyes filled, but no tears fell.
> “Was my love not enough for you?” Boroson shouted. “I gave you everything — my heart, my pride!
If you needed money, you could’ve asked! I’d have given you the world!
Was this your price for love?!”
Megh’s silence cut deeper than any reply.
> “You’re filth, Megh! Your beauty fooled me — but your soul is rotten!”
He raised his hand again —
But before he could strike, Dr. Kim caught his wrist mid-air.
The crowd gasped.
> “If you truly loved her,” Dr. Kim said coldly, “you’d have trusted her.
Love without trust isn’t love — it’s ownership.”
His words hung heavy in the air.
> “Nothing indecent happened.
She saved my life. We were trapped in the forest all night — that’s why we couldn’t return.”
Dilara, not understanding English, sneered anyway.
> “Oh sure — every milk seller says his yogurt isn’t sour!”
Megh, humiliated beyond words, picked up her bag — the one that had been thrown outside.
Mehul ran to her, sobbing.
> “Mami, please! Don’t throw her out! Where will she go?”
> “Then go with her!” Dilara barked. “Both of you can start your little ‘night shows’ together!”
Megh held Mehul’s hand gently.
> “Don’t cry, Apu. I’ll come back one day.
And that day, I’ll answer everyone.”
She turned to leave.
> “Go!” Dilara spat. “Your customers must be waiting!”
Ohona cried out, running to her.
> “Where will you go?”
Megh wiped her tears.
> “I don’t know. But Allah’s world is vast. I’ll find a place.”
> “Then come with me,” Ohona begged. “You’re my best friend — no, my sister. Stay with me. You , me and Mehul Apu, We’ll live together!”
Megh smiled faintly.
> “You believing me is enough. But I can’t come.
I won’t let people insult you because of me.”
From behind, a deep voice said —
> “My daughter will go nowhere.”
Everyone turned — it was Dr. Dipal, their senior professor.
He walked forward with calm authority.
> “I know Megh. She could never do anything immoral.
So don’t bow your head, child. The ones who should be ashamed are those accusing you.”
Borshan’s eyes fell to the ground, guilt crushing him.
Megh knelt and touched Dr. Dipal’s feet.
> “Sir, bless me. So that one day I can prove everyone wrong.”
She turned to leave — but suddenly Dr. Kim caught her wrist.
Megh looked up, startled.
Dilara sneered,
> “See? Your client’s ready! Maybe he likes what he bought!
But girls like you are never wives — only one-night companions!”
Before her words could echo further, Dr. Kim’s voice boomed —
> “I want to marry her.”
The world went silent.
> “Don’t think this is charity,” he continued firmly.
“I am the reason her character is being questioned.
So I’ll make it right. I want her as my wife.”
Megh gave a bitter smile.
> “I’ve lived my whole life on others’ mercy, Doctor. I don’t want more of it.”
Dr. Kim turned to Dr. Dipal.
> “Sir, you understand the situation.
Because of me, her name is being dragged through the mud.
I want to take her with me — as my wife.”
Dr. Dipal looked into his eyes.
> “Are you certain, Doctor Kim? Are you ready to take full responsibility for her?”
> “Yes, sir,” Dr. Kim said without hesitation. “Completely.”
Dr. Dipal turned to Megh.
> “Child, perhaps this is what fate decided for you.
Say yes, Megh.”
She stood silent — lost, trembling.
Borshan took a step forward, guilt and tears mixing.
But before he could speak, Megh whispered to Dr. Kim,
> “I agree.”
Kim faced the stunned crowd.
> “Since everyone waited so long to see the drama — stay a little longer. Watch the wedding.”
Ohona translated in shock — and gasps rippled through the crowd.
Dilara and Arshi went pale.
Mehul grabbed her sister’s hand, crying,
> “Don’t do this, Megh! Let’s go somewhere far away!
I’ll work if I have to, just don’t leave me!”
Megh smiled faintly through tears.
> “Take it easy, Apu. Maybe I’m just too greedy — how could I refuse such a wealthy groom?”
Then she added softly,
“From today, your Megh is dead.”
Moments later, Fahad arrived with the registrar.
Before the stunned eyes of everyone present —
Dr. Kim and Megh were married.
Arshi whispered to her mother,
> “Maa… she got a foreign husband. An even higher match than we imagined.”
Dilara’s face burned crimson.
Kim signed the papers first. Megh’s hands shook as she reached for the pen —
And just then, Borshan rushed forward, trying to hold her hand.
Dr. Kim caught his wrist firmly.
> “Don’t make that mistake.
Maybe you had rights over her before —
But from this moment, she’s mine.”
Borshan shouted,
> “She’ll only be yours after she signs!
And I know Megh loves me — she’ll never do it!”
Dr. Kim’s expression didn’t change.
He held up the paper.
> “She already has.
Megh is my wife now.
And if you ever try to touch her again — I’ll bury you myself.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
Borshan stood frozen, as if the world had ended.
Dr. Kim took Megh’s bag, threw it to the ground — and set it on fire.
The flames danced like a funeral pyre.
> “From today,” Dr. Kim said quietly,
“Megh is dead to all of you — and all of you are dead to her.
Come, Megh.”
He held her hand tightly and led her away, through the stunned, silent crowd.
Dr. Dipal followed behind.
Mehul and Ohona wept openly.
Borshan sank to his knees, staring after the woman he had destroyed with his doubt.
And as the fire flickered in the wind,
so did the final light of a love lost to mistrust.
