The King’s Summons

The sky trembled as the rift widened, dark lightning streaking across the clouds like veins. The canyon wind grew colder, sharper, as though the world itself recoiled from the presence pressing through the opening.

Azel’s wings instinctively wrapped around Liora, shielding her from the violent pull of the rift. His eyes remained locked on the growing tear in the heavens—his expression carved with fear he had never shown before.

Liora looked up at him. “Azel… what is that? What is he?”

Azel’s jaw clenched. “My father—the Demon King. The ruler of the abyss. The one who cursed our bloodline.”

A pulse of energy shot from the rift, forcing Azel to kneel. Liora fell beside him, gripping his hand.

“Azel!” she yelled over the roaring wind. “Why is he calling you now?”

“Because I broke the seal,” Azel gritted out. “He can sense my full power again. He wants me back to take the throne.”

“You don’t want that,” she whispered. “I know you don’t.”

A deep voice, impossibly ancient, boomed from the rift:

“You defy me, Azel? You reject your inheritance?”

Azel’s wings flared, trembling under the pressure.

“I refuse your throne!” he shouted into the storm. “I refuse everything you gave me!”

The wind howled in fury.

From the rift emerged a shape—vast, towering, made of fire and shadow. Not fully solid, but its presence alone felt suffocating. It didn’t step through completely, but its eyes—two burning suns—pierced the world like spears.

Liora gasped. She had never felt anything so powerful, so overwhelming. Her knees buckled under the weight of the king’s gaze.

“You disappoint me, son,” the Demon King said. “You were born to rule, not to hide among weak humans.”

Azel growled, his wings pulling Liora even closer. “Leave her out of this.”

The king’s gaze shifted to Liora.

She felt her breath freeze in her lungs.

“A human girl,” the king mused. “Is this the reason you resist me?”

Azel’s aura exploded with a surge of fury. “If you touch her—”

The king laughed—a sound that cracked the sky.

“You grow bold, Azel. And reckless.”

The rift pulsed again. Shadows poured downward like rain, splattering against the cliff before rising into humanoid shapes.

More demons—stronger ones, armored and sharp-edged—surrounded the cliff.

Liora’s heart pounded. “Azel… we’re surrounded.”

“I know,” he whispered.

A single tear of light flickered from the edge of the rift. Something descended—small, glowing, humming with an ancient melody.

Liora stared. “What is that?”

Azel recognized it instantly—and his breath hitched.

“A crown fragment… from the abyss.”

The Demon King’s voice thundered:

“If you will not return willingly, you will return in chains.”

The fragment shot toward Azel like a bullet of light.

He barely had time to react—

Liora jumped in front of him.

“LIORA!” he screamed.

The fragment struck her chest.

A flash—brilliant and violent—exploded outward. The world went white. Azel reached for her, but the force hurled them apart, sending him crashing into a boulder and her tumbling across the stone floor.

When the light cleared—

Liora lay motionless on the ground, glowing faintly, the fragment embedded against her skin like a burning mark.

Azel staggered toward her, wings dragging.

“No… no no no—Liora, open your eyes.” His voice cracked.

She didn’t move.

The king’s voice echoed with cruel satisfaction.

“Your weakness will cost you everything.”

Azel collapsed beside her, pulling her into his arms. His power flared wildly—darkness spiraling around them.

He kissed her forehead, tears mixing with the dust.

“Liora… don’t leave me.”

Her fingers twitched.

Barely.

Azel froze.

Then Liora’s eyes fluttered open—glowing faintly with an unnatural gold light.

“Azel…” she whispered weakly.

“What did he do to you?” Azel choked.

But the answer wasn’t his to give.

From above, the Demon King whispered:

“She now carries a piece of the abyss. She will not survive long… unless you return.”

Azel’s world shattered.

His father had given him the cruelest choice imaginable.

Return to the abyss and abandon the human world—

Or stay… and watch Liora slowly fall to the same darkness that cursed his bloodline.

The rift pulsed again.

“Choose, Azel.”

And the chapter closed on his broken whisper:

“I… I won’t lose her.”
