Chapter 4 – The Echo of Almost

Morning crept in quietly, spilling pale sunlight across Aira’s room. She woke with a heaviness in her chest—a weight she couldn't name, only feel. Last night’s conversation with Ray kept replaying in her mind. His voice, the crack in it, the way his eyes softened when he said her name… it all left a trace she couldn't ignore.

She sat up, pushing her hair back, trying to shake the feeling. Why does he make everything so complicated? she thought. Or maybe… why does he make everything so real? A notification buzzed on her phone.

Ray: “Are you awake? I need to talk to you. Please.”

Aira’s heartbeat stuttered. She stared at the message, her thumb hesitating. She knew Ray didn’t say please unless something was truly bothering him.

After a moment, she typed back:

Aira: “Meet me at the old bridge. Ten minutes.”---

The bridge was quiet at this hour. Only the sound of running water below and the flutter of leaves filled the space between them as Ray arrived, breathing a little faster than usual.

“You came,” he said, almost relieved.“You asked,” she replied softly, looking away.

Ray stepped closer. “Aira… what happened last night, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable.”

“You didn’t.”

Her voice surprised even herself. She swallowed, tightening her grip on the railing. “I just… I don’t know how to handle you sometimes.”Ray’s expression shifted—hurt mixed with hope, tangled in uncertainty. “Handle me?” he repeated. “Aira, I’m not a problem you have to solve.”

“That’s the issue,” she whispered back. “You’re not a problem. You’re… something else.”

He waited, silent—but not the kind of silence that pushes you away. The kind that pulls you closer.

Aira finally looked at him, really looked. His tired eyes told stories he never spoke, and in that moment she wondered how many times she had misunderstood the things he tried to say.

“Aira,” he said gently, “I don’t want to lose you. Not again.”

The word again hit her deeper than she expected. “You think I’m leaving?”

“You left before,” he said, voice rough. “When things got too close.”

Aira inhaled sharply. “And you let me.”This time, Ray stepped toward her, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him. “I won’t let you walk away so easily now.”

Her breath caught. “Ray…”

Before she could finish, he reached out—but not to touch her. He lifted her chin just enough so she met his eyes.

“I need you to tell me something,” he said.

“Do you feel it too? This… whatever it is between us?”Aira’s heart thudded, loud enough that she wondered if he could hear it.

She opened her mouth—

but the words refused to come.

Ray noticed, and slowly, his hand dropped. The hope in his eyes dimmed, turning into something softer, sadder.

“It’s okay,” he murmured. “You don’t have to say anything. Just… don’t run this time.”

Aira looked away, fighting the storm inside her. Ray stepped back, giving her the space she suddenly seemed to need, even if she never asked for it.

But as he turned to leave, she finally found her voice.

“Ray,” she called.

He stopped.

Aira exhaled shakily.

“I don’t know what this is,” she admitted. “But I feel something. And it scares me.”

Ray looked over his shoulder, and a quiet smile touched his lips. “Good,” he said softly. “Because it scares me too.”

And somehow, that made it feel a little less frightening.
