Kael’s eyes snapped open—bright silver, full of wolf and man, desire and fear.
He grabbed her waist, pulling her against him, his lips brushing her jaw, her cheek, her neck—
But he stopped.
Breathing her in.
Fighting himself.
“I shouldn’t,” he whispered.
Rose placed her hands on his chest.
“It feels like you should.”
Kael rested his forehead on her shoulder, breathing shakily.
“The bond is getting stronger,” he admitted. “If I keep touching you… I won’t want to stop.”
“Maybe I don’t want you to stop,” Rose whispered back.
His arm tightened around her in answer.
Morning light filtered through the cabin window.
Rose woke to find Kael standing by the door, shirtless, tension carved into every line of his body.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, sitting up.
He didn’t turn.
“A pack scout came close during the night. He smelled you.”
Rose blinked. “Why is that a problem?”
Kael finally looked at her.
His jaw was clenched… and his eyes held something dangerously possessive.
“Because you smell like me now.”
Rose flushed.
“I… what does that mean?”
“It means any wolf who senses it will think you’re mine.”
Rose swallowed.
“And is that… a bad thing?”
Kael stepped closer, slowly.
“Rose… if they think you’re mine, they will come for you. To use you. To hurt you. To get to me.”
He reached her and crouched in front of her so they were eye level.
“My curse puts you in danger.”
Rose touched his face gently.
“What curse, Kael?”
He hesitated—but she deserved the truth.
“I was born under a broken moon,” he said. “Half light, half shadow. A prophecy marked me at birth. I’m destined either to be the strongest Alpha in centuries…” His voice darkened. “Or the monster who destroys the pack.”
Rose’s breath caught.
Kael continued quietly:
“And the curse says my mate—the one chosen for me—will either break my fate… or die because of it.”
Rose’s heart slammed painfully.
“And that mate is… me,” she whispered.
Kael’s eyes softened and hardened at the same time.
“Yes.”
A tear slipped down Rose’s cheek.
Kael reached up and brushed it away with his thumb, his touch gentle.
“I didn’t want this for you,” he whispered. “I didn’t want you pulled into my darkness.”
Rose leaned into his hand, meeting his eyes.
“You’re not darkness, Kael.”
He swallowed hard.
“And what if I hurt you?”
“You won’t.”
Kael’s voice broke—low, vulnerable.
“I’m terrified of losing you… and I haven’t even had you.”
Rose placed her forehead against his.
“You already have me.”
Kael’s breath trembled.
He closed his eyes and held her face in both hands, pulling her closer—
Their lips almost met again, deeper, slower, filled with longing—
Until—
A loud knock shook the door.
And a male voice growled from outside:
“Alpha Kael. We know the human girl is inside.”
Kael’s eyes turned deadly silver.
“Rose,” he whispered. “Stay behind me. No matter what happens.”
