I didn't sleep that night.
I lay in my small bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering if I had just made the biggest mistake of my life. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Shen Yichen's cold, calculating expression. Heard his businesslike tone as he discussed marriage like it was a merger agreement.
What kind of person proposed marriage to solve a business problem?
What kind of person accepted?
By the time my alarm went off at six AM, I had already been awake for hours. I showered and dressed with extra care, choosing a simple gray dress and black heels. Professional but not trying too hard. I applied minimal makeup and pulled my hair into a low ponytail.
Looking in the mirror, I barely recognized myself. I looked older somehow. More serious. Like I was preparing for battle instead of a business meeting.
Maybe I was.
I arrived at Shen Corporation at seven-thirty, too nervous to risk being late. The building was already buzzing with early morning activity. Employees hurried through the lobby with coffee cups and briefcases, preparing for another day.
Several people glanced at me, and I saw recognition flash in their eyes. The whispers started immediately.
"That's her. The one who kissed President Shen."
"What is she doing here so early?"
"Maybe she's getting fired in person."
I ignored them and walked straight to the elevator, my head held high. Let them talk. Soon they would have even more to gossip about.
Chen Hao was waiting for me when I stepped off on the forty-second floor. He looked as impeccably dressed as yesterday, his expression professionally neutral.
"Miss Lin," he greeted me with a slight nod. "President Shen is ready for you. Please follow me."
He led me down the hallway, but instead of going to Shen Yichen's office, we stopped at a conference room. Chen Hao opened the door, and I saw several people already inside.
Shen Yichen sat at the head of a long table, wearing a navy suit that made him look even more intimidating. Beside him sat an elderly woman in an elegant qipao, her gray hair styled perfectly, her eyes bright and sharp despite her age. Two other men in suits stood near the window lawyers, I guessed from their serious expressions and thick folders.
"Miss Lin, please come in," Shen Yichen said, his tone formal.
I stepped inside, my heart pounding. This was really happening.
"Allow me to introduce my grandmother, Madam Shen," Yichen continued, gesturing to the elderly woman.
She smiled warmly at me, and I was struck by how different her expression was from her grandson's. Where he was cold and distant, she radiated warmth and kindness.
"Lin Xia," she said, her voice stronger than I expected. "Come here, child. Let me look at you."
I approached hesitantly, unsure of the proper etiquette. Should I bow? Shake her hand?
Madam Shen solved the problem by reaching out and taking both of my hands in hers. Her skin was soft and paper-thin, but her grip was surprisingly firm.
"You're even prettier than you looked in that video," she said, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "And you have a kind face. Honest eyes. I can see why my grandson was smitten."
I felt my cheeks burn. Smitten? If only she knew the truth.
"Thank you, Madam Shen," I managed to say. "It's an honor to meet you."
"The honor is mine." She patted my hands. "It's been so long since I've seen Yichen smile. That kiss brought life to his eyes. You must be very special to have broken through his ice."
I glanced at Shen Yichen, who remained expressionless. How could his grandmother think he had smiled? He looked as emotionless now as he had yesterday.
"Grandmother," Yichen said gently. "We should begin. Miss Lin has a busy day ahead."
"Always so businesslike," Madam Shen sighed, but she released my hands and gestured for me to sit. "Very well. Let's discuss this marriage."
I took a seat across from Shen Yichen, trying not to fidget. One of the lawyers stepped forward and placed a thick document in front of me.
"This is the marriage contract," the lawyer explained. "It outlines all terms and conditions of the arrangement between you and President Shen. Please read it carefully before signing."
I picked up the document, my hands slightly shaky. It was even longer than the preliminary version I had read yesterday. Page after page of legal terminology, clauses, and stipulations.
"Perhaps I can summarize the key points," the other lawyer offered, seeing my overwhelmed expression. "The marriage will last for one year from the date of registration. You will live in President Shen's residence and accompany him to social functions as needed. All medical expenses for your mother will be covered by President Shen for the duration of the marriage and one year after. You will receive a monthly allowance of fifty thousand yuan and a divorce settlement of five million yuan at the conclusion of the marriage, provided all terms are fulfilled."
Five million yuan. The number still took my breath away.
"There are also confidentiality clauses," the first lawyer added. "You cannot discuss the true nature of this marriage with anyone. Not family, not friends. If the confidentiality agreement is broken, penalties will apply."
"How severe are the penalties?" I asked quietly.
"Fifty million yuan, plus legal fees," Shen Yichen answered. His dark eyes met mine across the table. "This arrangement requires absolute discretion, Miss Lin. My grandmother believes this is a love match. The board members will believe the same. Everyone must believe it. Can you commit to that?"
I thought about my mother in the hospital. About the bills piling up. About having one chance to change everything.
"Yes," I said firmly. "I can commit to that."
Madam Shen clapped her hands together. "Wonderful! Oh, this is so exciting. My Yichen is finally getting married. I never thought I would see this day."
The pure joy in her voice made guilt twist in my stomach. She seemed like such a kind woman. How would she feel if she knew the truth? That her grandson was paying me to pretend to love him?
"There's one more matter to discuss," Chen Hao said, speaking for the first time. He pulled out another folder. "The wedding itself. Madam Shen has requested a traditional ceremony."
My eyes widened. "A ceremony? I thought we would just register at the civil affairs office."
"Absolutely not!" Madam Shen looked scandalized. "You're marrying a Shen. We have traditions to uphold. Standards to maintain. The ceremony doesn't need to be large, but it must be proper."
Shen Yichen's jaw tightened slightly the first real emotion I had seen from him all morning. "Grandmother, we discussed this. A simple registration would be more efficient"
"Efficient?" She waved her hand dismissively. "Marriage isn't about efficiency, Yichen. It's about commitment. Love. Tradition. You will have a proper wedding ceremony, even if it's small and private. I insist."
The two of them stared at each other, and I saw a silent battle of wills taking place. Finally, Shen Yichen sighed.
"Fine. A small ceremony. Immediate family only."
Madam Shen smiled triumphantly. "And the Luo family, of course. And the Wangs. And perhaps the Zhaos..."
"Grandmother."
"Just a few close friends," she said innocently. "No more than one hundred people."
One hundred people? My stomach dropped. That wasn't a small, private ceremony. That was a full wedding with witnesses and expectations and a hundred chances for someone to see through our act.
"I'll make the arrangements," Chen Hao said, making notes on his tablet. "The ceremony can take place two weeks from today. That should give us enough time for preparations."
Two weeks. I had two weeks to prepare to marry a stranger in front of one hundred people.
"Now then," Madam Shen said cheerfully. "We should discuss the wedding dress. Lin Xia, dear, what style do you prefer? Traditional or modern? Red or white?"
I opened my mouth, but no words came out. This was moving too fast. Everything was spinning out of control.
"Perhaps Miss Lin needs a moment," Shen Yichen said, his tone neutral but his eyes fixed on my face. "This is a lot to process."
"Of course, of course." Madam Shen patted my hand again. "You must be overwhelmed, poor dear. Why don't you and Yichen take a walk? Discuss things privately? Chen Hao and I can handle the preliminary wedding arrangements."
Before I could protest, Shen Yichen stood up. "An excellent idea, Grandmother. Miss Lin, please come with me."
He walked toward the door, clearly expecting me to follow. I glanced at Madam Shen, who smiled encouragingly, then at the lawyers, who remained professionally impassive. Taking a deep breath, I stood and followed Shen Yichen out of the conference room.
He led me down the hallway in silence, past his office, to a small private balcony I hadn't noticed before. It was different from the party balcony more intimate, with potted plants and a small seating area.
The morning sun was bright, and Shanghai stretched out below us, the city already alive with traffic and activity.
"Are you having second thoughts?" Shen Yichen asked, his back to me as he gazed out at the city.
"I'm having about a thousand thoughts," I admitted. "This is all happening so fast."
"Cold feet are normal before a wedding." There was a hint of dry humor in his voice.
"This isn't a normal wedding."
"No," he agreed. "It's not."
He turned to face me, and in the morning light, I could see his features more clearly. He really was unfairly handsome. Sharp jawline, high cheekbones, dark eyes that seemed to hold secrets. No wonder half the women in Shanghai wanted to date him.
"If you want to back out, now is the time," he said quietly. "Once you sign that contract, there's no turning back. You'll be legally bound to me for one year."
I thought about my mother's frail voice on the phone. About the hospital bills. About working myself to exhaustion and still never having enough.
"I'm not backing out," I said, lifting my chin. "I made a decision, and I'm sticking to it."
"Even though it means marrying someone you don't love? Someone you barely know?"
"You're doing the same thing," I pointed out. "You don't love me either. This is a business arrangement for both of us."
Something flickered across his face an emotion I couldn't identify. "That's true."
We stood there in awkward silence for a moment. This man would be my husband in two weeks. We would live together, appear together in public, convince everyone we were in love. Yet we were still strangers.
"I have one question," I said finally. "That night on the balcony, before you knew I was going to kiss you. You were kind to me. You listened. You seemed... different. Was that an act?"
Shen Yichen was quiet for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "Everyone wears masks, Miss Lin. The question is which mask is real and which is the disguise."
It wasn't really an answer, but I sensed I wouldn't get a better one.
"Come on," he said, walking toward the door. "Let's go sign those contracts. We have a wedding to plan."
As I followed him back inside, I realized something. I was about to legally bind myself to a man I didn't understand. A man who hid behind ice and contracts and carefully worded responses. What had I gotten myself into?
