The Rain That Held Us Together

The rain had been falling for hours, turning Cebu’s streets into glistening rivers, when Jake finally said it. They were curled up on the couch, Daniel’s arm wrapped around him, the scent of old books and chamomile filling the air.

“I think I’m in love with you,” Jake whispered, his voice barely audible over the drumming rain. He’d been holding the words in for months—since that day in the bookstore, when their fingers had touched over a Neruda collection, and something in his chest had shifted.

Daniel pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, his expression soft and sure. “I fell in love with you the day you tried to save that dying fern on my balcony,” he said, a small smile playing at his lips. “You talked to it like it was a person. Like it mattered.”

Jake felt tears prick his eyes. In all his life, no one had ever seen him the way Daniel did—seen the messy, quiet parts of him and loved them anyway. He leaned in, their lips meeting in a kiss that felt like coming home—gentle at first, then deepening as years of unspoken feelings spilled out.

As the kiss grew more intense, Daniel pulled back, his hand cupping Jake’s cheek. “Are you sure?” he asked, his voice steady but soft. “We can stop anytime.”

Jake nodded, his heart racing. “I’ve never been more sure of anything.”

They moved slowly, carefully, as if handling something precious. Daniel’s hands were gentle as he undressed Jake, his touches filled with reverence—like he was mapping every curve, every scar, every part of him that made him Jake. Jake melted into the touch, feeling safe and seen in a way he’d never imagined possible.

In that moment, surrounded by the rain and the warmth of Daniel’s body, there was no past, no future—only the present, and the overwhelming feeling of being loved exactly as he was. Their intimacy was a celebration of everything they’d built: the late-night talks, the failed plants, the quiet moments of understanding. It was soft and tender, filled with whispers of “I love you” and promises of forever.

When it was over, they lay tangled together, Jake’s head on Daniel’s chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. The rain had stopped, and a single ray of moonlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

Daniel laughed, his chest rumbling beneath Jake’s head. “Of course it is. You talked to it like it was the most important thing in the world.”Daniel leaned down and kissed him, soft and sweet. “And I have you,” he said. “Forever, if you’ll let me.”

“I love you,” Daniel said again, pressing a kiss to the top of Jake’s head.

Jake smiled, closing his eyes. “I love you too.”

Jake smiled, closing his eyes. “Forever sounds perfect.”
