Are You Sure You Saw It?

Certainty?

Morning enveloped a small town in the countryside; the little wooden houses creaked as people woke up and walked through them. Some of them went outside their houses, some went straight to their gardens, others went to the fields, just living their lives normally. It was just a normal morning, right?

Soon, shouts were heard coming from the animal enclosure. People rushed to see what was happening, and when they arrived, the farmer from the small village was yelling in anger in direction of the forest. The villagers approached and asked why the man was shouting, the farmer, still furious, said "Those damned wolves keep attacking my sheep!".

Some residents saw one of the sheep lying in a pool of its own blood, covered in claw marks. One of the villagers asked how the farmer knew it was wolves that had done it, the farmer said "And what else could it be? Only those damned wolves keep attacking the animals." One of the residents pointed out the footprints in the mud; the farmer said they were wolf footprints. Another resident asked how many sheep the wolves had attacked; the farmer said that so far he had found at least four dead sheep.

A young man who studied in a big city but lived there, knelt down beside the dead sheep and the footprints and said, "This doesn't make sense. Wolves don't kill without reason; they kill to feed themselves and wouldn't leave the bodies with just scratches without eating anything. Besides, these footprints are too big to be from a common wolf."

One of the residents agreed, others began to look more closely, none of the sheep had any marks indicating that anything had been eaten, only wounds and claw marks, no bites. The farmer asked what could have done that if it wasn't a wolf. The young man said that there was no way to know, but it was a large animal and that it wasn't hunting for food, but for sport.

The residents spent the rest of the day speculating about what could have done that. It wasn't unusual for wolves to attack animals, but in fact they always either disposed of the body or devoured it on the spot, so what was strange was that the bodies remained in place, only wounded.

As night fell, everyone knew that nights in the region were considered dangerous during the two darkest weeks, because those were the weeks when wolves usually approached the cities more closely, and this made things even stranger, since there were still at least three weeks until those two weeks, so why would wolves attack? But what if it wasn't them?

That night, the baker's daughter went out to deliver the orders to the residents, which had only just been finished that night. The young woman passed by several houses, and some time passed until she arrived at the second-to-last house, the house where the young man lived. She only knew his name and that he studied in a big city. She left the box in front of the young man's house and went to the last one, the farmer's house. She found the man strange, but knew he was just angry because wolves were attacking his animals. She reached the door and left the box there, and was about to leave, but she heard a strange noise. She walked to the side, looking at the animal enclosure, until she saw a giant wolf standing near the broken window of the house with the farmer's head in its mouth.

The wolf looked at her with red eyes, the young woman screamed, and the villagers ran to see what was happening, but the animal, realizing that more people were approaching, dropped the farmer and ran back into the forest. The villagers arrived and saw only the farmer's head hanging from the window. One of the villagers broke down the door and entered the house, noticing that the house was completely ransacked; there were muddy footprints, blood, and clear signs of a struggle. The body was lying near the window with its head on the windowsill.

The villagers asked the girl what had happened, and she said, crying, "There was a huge wolf walking on two legs, at the window, holding the farmer's head in its mouth." A hunter noticed the wolf's footprints and bite marks on the farmer's head; it really had been done by a wolf, but how could the wolf walk on two legs?

The residents began searching the surrounding area, while the baker and his wife arrived and took the young woman away, but when she looked into the forest she saw the animal she had just seen, in the middle of the forest looking at the city.
