Ren rode his horse, a sturdy mare named Ember, through the rolling hills and dense forests of Aethel. The sun was shining, casting a warm glow over the landscape, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers. He felt a sense of freedom and excitement, knowing that he was embarking on a new chapter of his life.
As he rode, Ren couldn't help but think about his family and the secrets they kept. His father's words echoed in his mind: "The Academy will test you in ways you can't imagine. Don't hold back, but don't show them everything either. You never know who might be watching." Ren wondered what his father meant by those words, and what secrets he was keeping.
The journey to the Aethel Academy was supposed to take a few days, and Ren was determined to enjoy the ride. He had packed light, bringing only the essentials: his sword, a small bag of clothes, and a few gold coins. He had never been this far from home before, and he was eager to see the world beyond Oakhaven.
As the day wore on, Ren encountered a group of travelers on the road. They were a family, traveling in a wagon with all their belongings piled high. Ren nodded in greeting as they passed, and the father, a burly man with a thick beard, waved back.
"Where are you headed?" the father called out.
Ren reined in Ember and rode back to the wagon. "I'm on my way to the Aethel Academy," he said, trying to sound confident. "I'm going to take the entrance exams."
The father's face lit up with a broad smile. "Ah, you're a young scholar, eh? The Academy is a fine place. You'll learn a lot, but you'll also have to work hard. What's your name, lad?"
"I'm Ren," he said, feeling a sense of pride.
The father nodded. "I'm Grimbold, and this is my family. We're on our way to visit some relatives in a nearby village. Good luck to you, Ren. May the road rise up to meet you."
Ren smiled and thanked Grimbold, feeling a sense of gratitude towards the stranger. He continued on his way, feeling more at ease now that he had met some friendly faces on the road.
As the sun began to set, Ren came across a small inn, nestled in a clearing surrounded by trees. Smoke was rising from the chimney, and the smell of roasting meat wafted through the air, making Ren's stomach growl with hunger.
He dismounted Ember and led her to the stables, where a groom took her reins. "Welcome to the Silver Stag Inn," the groom said, eyeing Ren's sword. "You here for the night?"
Ren nodded, handing over a few coins. "Just for the night. I'm on my way to the Aethel Academy."
The groom nodded, pocketing the coins. "You're a brave one, heading to the Academy. You'll fit right in here, then. We've had a few students from the Academy staying with us."
Ren smiled, feeling a sense of belonging. He followed the groom into the inn, where he was greeted by the warm glow of the fire pit and the sound of laughter and conversation.
As he ate his dinner and listened to the chatter around him, Ren felt a sense of excitement and anticipation. He was one step closer to his dream, and he was ready to face whatever lay ahead.
But as he settled in for the night, Ren couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. He glanced around the inn, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Shrugging it off, he drifted off to sleep, ready to face the challenges of the Aethel Academy.
