EPISODE 4 — “HER FIRST SAFE NIGHT”

The rain had softened by the time they stepped outside the café, but the night air was still cold enough to make Seraphina shiver. Caelum adjusted his pace so she didn’t have to rush, keeping just close enough to steady her without crowding her space.

She held his jacket tight around her slight frame, the sleeves swallowing her hands.

Her steps were small, careful—each one revealing how exhausted she truly was.

Caelum noticed everything.

The way she hunched slightly to protect her ribs.

The way she flinched when thunder rumbled far away.

The way she kept looking over her shoulder, even at empty streets.

“Is someone following you?” he asked quietly.

Seraphina froze.

Her breath hitched.

“I… I don’t know.”

Her voice shook.

“I ran. I didn’t look back.”

He nodded once.

He didn’t push.

But something dangerous flickered in his eyes—something fiercely protective.

They walked in silence until they reached a modest apartment building tucked between a bakery and a laundromat. The lights were dim, the area calm. Not dangerous… but not exposing, either.

Caelum opened the main door, holding it wide.

“You can go in first,” he said softly.

Seraphina hesitated.

Small things like this—letting her choose the pace, letting her walk in first—felt strange.

Strange, and safe.

Inside, the hallway smelled of clean laundry and old wood. Caelum stopped at the third door on the left, unlocking it with a quiet click.

He stepped aside again.

“You can look around. Nothing’s going to jump out at you.”

She managed a weak, breathless laugh.

It startled even her.

The apartment was small but warm—soft lighting, shelves filled with books, a couch that looked well-used, and a faint scent of cedar. No clutter. No mess. No signs of anyone else living there.

Just him.

He nodded toward the short hallway.

“The spare room is the second door. It has a lock. You can use it.”

Her eyes widened. “You’re giving me… a whole room?”

“Unless you wanted the couch,” Caelum shrugged. “But the bed’s softer.”

She blinked, confused.

Surprised.

Touched.

Most men she had known never offered safety without a cost.

Caelum was different.

Dangerously different.

“Are you hungry?” he asked. “You barely ate at the café.”

“I… maybe a little.”

He turned toward the kitchen.

“I’ll make something light.”

Seraphina took a step, then stopped.

Her voice trembled.

“I don’t want to trouble you—”

“It’s no trouble,” Caelum cut in softly.

“Not tonight.”

It was the way he said it—low, sincere, unshakeable—that finally loosened the knot in her chest.

She slipped into the spare room. The space was simple—a bed, a small nightstand, a window with curtains. Clean. Quiet. Safe.

She sank onto the mattress, touching the blanket with trembling fingers.

Safe.

The word itself felt foreign.

Her hands curled into the fabric, and suddenly a sob clawed up her throat. She covered her mouth instantly, fighting the tears, fighting the panic rising from the memories she had tried to outrun.

Footsteps stopped outside the partly closed door.

“Seraphina?” Caelum’s voice was gentle, careful.

“Are you okay?”

She wiped her eyes quickly.

“Y-yes. I’m fine.”

“You don’t have to be,” he replied from the doorway.

“I just need to know you’re breathing.”

Something inside her cracked.

She swallowed hard.

“I am,” she whispered.

“Good.”

A pause.

“I’m making soup.”

Soup.

Warm.

Home-like.

Safe.

She didn’t know why those simple words made her eyes burn again.

---

Minutes later, she found herself sitting at the small kitchen table while Caelum placed a steaming bowl in front of her. He didn’t pry. He didn’t stare. He didn’t ask for her story.

He just… existed beside her.

Quietly. Steadily. Kindly.

Halfway through eating, she found herself speaking without meaning to.

“I had nowhere to go.”

Caelum didn’t look up immediately.

He let her speak at her own pace.

“No friends?” he asked softly.

“Not anymore.”

“Family?”

Her hand froze on the spoon.

“I don’t have one.”

He nodded slowly, respectfully.

No apologies.

No pity.

Just… understanding.

After she finished eating, he handed her a clean towel and pointed toward the bathroom.

“You can shower if you want. There are fresh clothes in the cabinet. Lock the door. Take your time.”

Her throat tightened again.

She took the towel with shaking hands.

“Why are you doing all this for me?”

Caelum met her eyes, and something raw flickered in his expression.

“…Because no one deserves to face a night like this alone.”

Her breath hitched.

She backed toward the bathroom, overwhelmed, unable to speak.

Caelum stayed in the kitchen, giving her space, giving her silence.

Giving her safety.

---

In the shower, the hot water hit Seraphina’s skin and she finally broke.

Quietly.

Slowly.

Her sobs drowned in the steam.

She wasn’t crying from fear.

She was crying because it had been a long, long time since someone had shown her gentleness without wanting something back.

When she returned to the spare room wearing his oversized shirt and sweatpants, Caelum was sitting on the couch, arms resting on his knees, looking at the floor like he was trying to decide whether to say something.

He stood when he noticed her.

“I set an extra blanket in your room. The lock works from the inside. If you need anything—water, pain medicine, anything—just knock.”

She nodded.

“Caelum…?”

He paused.

“Yes?”

Her voice came out as a whisper.

“Thank you.”

His chest rose with a deep, steady breath.

“You’re safe here, Seraphina.”

His voice softened.

“I promise.”

She held his gaze for one fragile moment—

a moment where her broken heart felt the warmth of something she hadn’t felt in years:

Trust.

Then she retreated into the room and quietly closed the door.

Caelum stayed by the couch, listening until he heard the soft click of the lock.

Only then did he let the protective tension in his shoulders relax.

Because tonight, for the first time…

Seraphina Hale was sleeping under a roof where no one could hurt her.

And Caelum Ward intended to keep it that way.
