It was late, the sun already dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. A cool breeze carried the scent of salt and seaweed.
The beach was deserted. Perfect.
I walked to the edge of the sand, the waves whispering secrets to the shore. The water looked dark and inviting, a vast expanse of nothingness stretching out to the horizon.
I stared at the ocean, lost in thought. The dark thoughts, the ones I had been fighting for so long, resurfaced with renewed force. The pain was too much. The loneliness was too deep. I couldn't do this anymore.
Slowly, deliberately, I unshouldered my bag. It landed on the sand with a soft thud. I didn't look back.
I began to walk towards the water, my steps slow and hesitant at first, then gaining momentum as I moved further away from the shore. The cold water lapped at my ankles, then my knees, then my waist.
The darkness deepened, both around me and within me.
I closed my eyes, ready to surrender.
But then, a sound. Laughter. Shouts.
I opened my eyes and saw them. Seven figures silhouetted against the fading light, walking along the beach in my direction. They were young, carefree, their voices filled with a joy I hadn't felt in years.
They saw me too. Their laughter died down, replaced by a concerned silence.
They stopped, watching me.
I froze, caught between the desire to disappear and the desperate hope that
someone, anyone, would see my pain.
The sight of them, their youthful faces etched with concern, was enough to break the spell. Shame washed over me, followed by a surge of panic. I couldn't let them see me like this.
I quickened my pace, wading deeper into the water, the cold seeping into my bones. The waves crashed against my chest, threatening to pull me under. This was it.
But then, they were running. The seven figures sprinted towards me, their bare feet pounding on the wet sand. I could hear their shouts, their pleas.
Closer, closer…
Strong arms wrapped around me, pulling me back, away from the darkness. I struggled at first, resisting their efforts, but they were too strong.
