Chapter 4 - Eye contact is a challenge
Few days later
Benjamin POV
For the past few days I understood something i hadn't before.
Eye contact Is neutral, with no words passed just a silent look of acceptance.
We crossed paths too often to be a chance... More than a coincidence to say, whether it may be in the corridors, library or even vending machines. I never looked at him, but it was not so hard to never notice him, his brief glances towards me.
I would glance up, and there he'd be, staring at me.... A subtle glance with a look of recognition. No words passed, the changed expression.... just a look of recognition I see you.
In class the professor raised an unsolved question daring someone to reach for it. The room paused…. Waited .
I raised my hand. So did he.
The professor hesitated but settled with me. I stood and answered it immediately with pronounced clarity and logic. By the look of it the professor and even the class were impressed. I settled in my seat not looking back.
But his voice interrupted.. Continuing where I left off...
Not correcting it or contradicting it.... just expanding my answer in an even more clear way. I felt something tighten beneath my ribs. Still I forced myself to look back. And there he was looking at me.
For a moment the lecture hall disappeared.. Just the space between us. He mouth curved slightly not smiling... Smirking at me. As if it was intentional. I looked away immediately. Once the lecture is completed... I stood up immediately and got out of the class.
I Checked my phone pretending to read the messages I hadn't received. As I was walking I sensed him before I saw him. He was walking up the stairs along with his friend laughing and chatting. He looked at me briefly... Acknowledging me.
"Good answer" he said already walking past me. As if it doesn't matter to him whether I reply or not.
"Yours too" I said immediately before I could resist myself. He stopped and turned towards me. It was the first time we were facing each other. Just us.. there's nothing between us, no benches or desk or no library racks. A direct face to face meet.
"See you around" He said and walked away immediately without waiting for a reply.
That night I replayed the moment continuously from the way he looked to the way he talked… The pause… His voice and his eyes, brownish shade with a hint of gold. And There's this thing I also noticed even though I was standing a step above his…He was still taller than me. And truth to be told I hate it even more along with his nonchalant-ness.
The eye contact I realized was no longer accidental, a challenge. And for the first time since the rankings were posted, I wasn't entirely sure that I could look away.
