Elena began to feel the shift long before she could name it.
It was in the way Alexander grew quieter around her, his silences heavier than before. Meetings ended faster. Conversations stayed professional. The warmth she had slowly begun to sense behind his cold exterior now felt distant, locked away once more.
She told herself not to overthink it.
After all, Alexander Vance was not a man who explained himself.
Still, doubt crept in, unwelcome and persistent.
Sebastian, on the other hand, seemed to appear whenever she least expected him. He offered coffee during late work hours, checked in on her projects, and listened truly listened when she spoke. His attention felt effortless, his presence reassuring.
“You deserve someone who doesn’t make you question your worth,” Sebastian said one evening as they stood by the window overlooking the city.
Elena smiled politely but said nothing.
From a distance, Alexander watched them together, his jaw tight. He hated himself for the jealousy burning in his chest, hated the way it made him feel weak. He told himself Elena was just an employee. That his concern was misplaced.
But lies, even the ones we tell ourselves, have a way of unraveling.
That night, Alexander received a message that changed everything.
A confidential report slid across his desk anonymous, detailed, damning. It suggested Elena had shared internal design concepts with an outside competitor. The name attached to the evidence made his chest tighten.
Sebastian Cross.
Anger flared instantly, sharp and unforgiving. Alexander didn’t pause to question the source. He didn’t seek clarification. Old wounds reopened too easily.
The next morning, Elena was summoned to his office.
She entered with a cautious smile that faded the moment she saw his expression.
“Sit,” Alexander said curtly.
She obeyed, her heart pounding.
“Care to explain this?” He tossed the file onto the desk.
Elena flipped through the pages, confusion turning to shock. “I didn’t do this.”
“You’ve been spending a lot of time with Sebastian,” Alexander said coldly. “Convenient.”
Her eyes widened. “Is that what this is about? You think I’d betray you?”
“I think,” he replied sharply, “that trust is a luxury I can’t afford.”
The words cut deeper than she expected.
“If you don’t trust me,” Elena said quietly, standing, “then nothing I say will matter.”
She walked out, her chest tight with hurt.
Alexander stood frozen, anger battling something far more dangerous regret.
Hours later, Sebastian visited Alexander unannounced.
“I heard things got… complicated,” Sebastian said smoothly.
Alexander’s eyes darkened. “Stay away from her.”
Sebastian sighed. “You’re pushing her right into my arms.”
That night, Elena sat alone in her apartment, tears blurring the city lights outside her window. She replayed the conversation again and again, trying to understand how everything had gone so wrong so quickly.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Sebastian.
I’m here if you need someone.
She stared at the screen for a long moment before placing the phone face down.
Across the city, Alexander stood by his window, the weight of his actions settling heavily on his chest. For the first time in years, his success meant nothing.
He had chosen pride over truth.
And somewhere between lies and silence, love was beginning to fracture.
