The Viper Strikes Back

News in the Royal Palace traveled faster than the winter winds. By noon the next day, every noble in the capital knew two things: The Head Maid had been thrown out in disgrace, and the King had laughed at dinner with the Queen.

To most, it was gossip. To Duke Valerius Vane, the King’s uncle and the most powerful man in the Council, it was a declaration of war.

In his study, lined with books he never read and weapons he never used, Duke Vane crumpled the report from his spy.

"She dismissed Thorne," Vane murmured, his voice smooth like oil over gravel. "The quiet little mouse... grew claws."

He stood, walking to the fireplace. He was a handsome man in an aged, sharp way, with silver-streaked hair and eyes that always seemed to be mocking you. He threw the paper into the flames.

"If Elara Valois wakes up," he whispered to the fire, "then Kaelen will have a shield. And I cannot kill a King who is guarded by love."

He turned to his valet. "Prepare the carriage. I think it is time I paid my dear niece a visit. I must... comfort her after the stress of the wedding."

The Queen’s Solar was Elara’s favorite place in the palace—or it had been, before it became her prison in the last life. It was a magnificent room made entirely of reinforced glass, jutting out over the snowy cliffs. Inside, magical heating crystals kept it warm enough for exotic flowers to bloom even in deep winter.

Elara sat on a velvet chaise, a book resting unread in her lap.

She closed her eyes, and for a moment, the warmth of the sun felt like the heat of the executioner's torch. Her breath hitched. The phantom sensation of the blade on her neck returned, a cold line of ice against her skin.

Breathe, she told herself, gripping the fabric of her dress. You are not there. You are here. You are safe.

"Your Majesty?"

Elara opened her eyes. Nina was standing there, looking pale.

"The Duke of Vane is here," Nina whispered. "He... he says he is worried about your health."

Elara’s blood ran cold. In the past, the Duke had been her 'kind uncle.' He had brought her sweets, listened to her complaints about Kaelen, and slowly, methodically, twisted her words to make her look like a traitor. He was the architect of her death.

"Let him in," Elara said. Her voice was steady, even if her heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "We cannot keep the King's uncle waiting."

A moment later, Duke Vane strode in. He was dressed in impeccable gray silk, a benevolent smile plastered on his face.

"Elara, my dear child!" he exclaimed, opening his arms as if to hug her.

Elara did not stand. She did not smile. She remained seated, her posture perfect, her face a mask of porcelain calm.

"Uncle," she said coolly. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Vane paused, his arms dropping slowly. He sensed the change immediately. The girl who used to run to him for comfort was gone.

"I heard about the... unpleasantness with Mrs. Thorne," Vane said, taking a seat opposite her without being invited. "I was shocked. Thorne has been a loyal servant to our family for years. I worried you were acting out of... stress. Perhaps the adjustment to married life is too difficult?"

It was a trap. If she admitted stress, he would recommend a doctor—one on his payroll, who would drug her into compliance.

"Loyalty is a complex thing, Uncle," Elara said, picking up her teacup. "Some are loyal to the Crown. Others are loyal to... darker things. Thorne was stealing."

"A few coins here and there," Vane waved his hand dismissively. "Is that worth tarnishing your reputation for benevolence? The nobles are whispering, Elara. They say you are becoming cruel. Hysterical."

"Let them whisper," Elara said, taking a slow sip of tea. She set the cup down with a deliberate clink. "A Queen does not concern herself with the opinions of sheep. She concerns herself with the safety of the shepherd."

Vane’s eyes narrowed. The benevolent mask slipped, revealing the predator beneath.

"You speak boldly for someone with so few friends," Vane said softly. The threat hung in the warm air, poisonous and sweet. "Kaelen is busy with war. The court is a dangerous place for a young woman alone. Who will protect you when the shadows lengthen, Elara?"

In her last life, this would have terrified her. She would have begged him for help.

Now, she leaned forward.

"You are mistaken, Duke," she said, her voice dropping to match his. "I am not alone. I have the truth. And I have the King."

"The King?" Vane laughed, a dry, harsh sound. "Kaelen is a weapon, Elara. He does not know how to love. He will break you eventually."

"Perhaps," Elara said, standing up. She cast a long shadow over the Duke. "Or perhaps he was just waiting for someone brave enough to hold the weapon without cutting themselves. Now, if you will excuse me, I have an appointment at the Great Temple. I find I am in need of... spiritual guidance."

Vane stood up slowly. He looked at her with a mixture of hatred and grudging respect. He realized then that the game had changed.

"Of course," Vane said, bowing low. "Pray for us all, Your Majesty. We shall need it."

As the Duke left, Elara collapsed back onto the chaise, her legs giving out. She was shaking uncontrollably. Confronting him took every ounce of willpower she possessed.

"I did it," she whispered to the empty room. "I stood up to him."

But his words lingered. Who will protect you?

She knew Kaelen would try, but Kaelen dealt in swords and armies. The Duke dealt in poison and rumors. She needed a different kind of power. She needed the one force in the Kingdom that even the King bowed to.

She needed the Church.

"Nina!" Elara called out, her voice regaining its strength.

"Yes, Your Majesty?"

"Prepare the carriage," Elara said, looking out the glass walls toward the towering white spires of the city's cathedral. "We are going to see the High Priestess. It is time I paid my respects to the Goddess who sent me back."

She touched the small sapphire pendant at her throat.

I have the King's attention, she thought. Now, I need the Goddess's protection.
