The Billionaire Behind the Wheel

The Billionaire Behind the Wheel

Chapter 1

Silence. Only the faint clink of silver against porcelain carried through the Ashford dining room — a cathedral-ceilinged space draped in crystal light and the subtle aroma of truffle oil. The atmosphere was formal. Almost cold.

At the head of the table, Harrison Ashford, patriarch of the family, worked through his steak with measured precision. Beside him, his wife Diana sat poised and glittering, her diamond jewelry catching the chandelier light with every small movement.

Across the table sat two daughters who could not have been more different. Bianca Ashford — twenty, beautiful, poured into a designer mini dress — was angling her phone over her plate, hunting for the perfect shot to post. Her energy was bright and bubbly, though it carried an unmistakable edge of arrogance.

Opposite her, Kira Ashford watched the performance with quiet detachment. At twenty-seven, Kira was known to her family as nothing more than a cafe barista. Her long hair was twisted into a careless bun, and she wore a plain blouse that wouldn't have looked out of place behind a coffee counter. She ate her dinner calmly, as though the conversation at this table had nothing to do with her.

It rarely did.

Harrison set down his knife and fork with a deliberate clatter. The sound was enough to make Bianca lower her phone.

"There's something I need to tell all of you," he said, his voice carrying the weight of a boardroom announcement.

Diana leaned forward, eyes brightening. "A new deal, Harry? Or the villa expansion?"

Harrison shook his head. "This is bigger. This is about the future." He paused, letting the silence do its work. "Richard Sterling and I have agreed to arrange a marriage between one of our daughters and his only son, Adrian."

At the word arranged, Bianca's fork hit the table with a sharp crack. Her face twisted into an immediate pout.

"An arranged marriage? Which one of us, Dad? Bianca or Kira?" Diana's voice had the tone of someone appraising merchandise.

Bianca jumped in before her father could answer. "No way. Absolutely not. I'm twenty, Mom. Twenty. I still want to go out, have fun, live my life. I'm not marrying some boring old guy I've never met."

She shot a pointed look across the table at Kira. "Why not Kira? She's twenty-seven — practically overdue. Let her take this one." A condescending smile. "Right, Kira?"

Kira glanced up. Her dark brown eyes held nothing but calm. She speared another shrimp and placed it on her plate.

"If Dad says it's your call, I'll go along with whatever. I'd rather spend my evening at the cafe than discuss marriage." She turned back to her food as though arranged marriages were as tedious as the nightly dinner menu.

"See, Dad? Let Kira do it. She likes quiet places — might as well get her a husband." Bianca pressed her case with theatrical urgency.

Harrison's gaze drifted to Kira for a moment, then back to Bianca and Diana.

"Whether it's Bianca or Kira doesn't matter to me. What matters is that one of you goes. This is an extremely profitable business alliance. And you should know — the man we're talking about is Adrian Sterling."

The pout vanished from Bianca's face like it had been slapped off. Her narrowed eyes flew wide open. She stared at her father as though he'd just announced they'd won the lottery.

"Sterling? Wait — Dad, are you serious? You mean... Sterling Group?" Her voice cracked with a hunger that ignited out of nowhere.

Harrison nodded. "Of course. Richard Sterling is my oldest friend and our biggest partner on the resort project."

It was as though someone had hit a reset button. Every ounce of Bianca's refusal evaporated, swallowed whole by ambition. Her face lit up, teetering on the edge of hysterical.

"I'll do it! I want to! I'll be the one!" she shrieked, abandoning every pretense of table manners.

Diana, who had been lukewarm on the idea, now frowned. "Wait, Bianca — you just said you didn't want this. You're still young, sweetheart. I thought Kira would be better suited. She's more... mature."

Bianca scoffed, looking at her mother as though the woman had crawled out of a cave.

"Mom, you have no idea* who the Sterlings are. Sterling Group isn't just some real estate firm with a couple of vacation rentals. They're the kings of property and tech in this country. If I become Mrs. Sterling, I won't just live comfortably — I'll live like royalty for generations. Everything we have right now?" She swept a hand at the dining room. "It's nothing. Nothing* compared to what they're worth." The words tumbled out — raw, vulgar, calculating — and they silenced Diana completely. For a moment, greed bloomed openly on the older woman's face.

"Is that true, Harry? They're really that big?" Diana's eyes now shone with the same avarice as her daughter's.

"Far bigger than you can imagine," Harrison replied, allowing himself a proud smile at the business coup he'd engineered. "So — who's it going to be?"

Before he could even finish, Bianca was already puffing out her chest.

"Me, Dad. I'm going. I'm perfect for this. I'll handle everything."

"Of course, sweetheart," Diana said, now fully aboard. "Bianca's the obvious choice."

Kira, who had been a silent audience through all of this, finished eating. She laid her silverware down neatly.

"In that case, I'll head to the cafe, Dad. I have a meeting with a coffee supplier." She rose from her chair, casual as ever, showing not a flicker of interest in the name that had just sent her stepmother and stepsister into a frenzy.

"Wait, Kira." Harrison's voice stopped her in the doorway. "Tomorrow night, we've been invited to dinner at the Sterling estate. You're coming too."

Kira's eyebrow lifted slightly. "Me? I thought Bianca was the one getting matched."

"It's an informal family gathering. You need to be there to show how solid this family is. And... just in case." Harrison left the thought dangling.

Bianca looked annoyed but held her tongue. "Fine, let Kira tag along, Mom. Let her see what a real house looks like. But Kira — please don't show up in your barista apron. That would be embarrassing."

Kira gave a small nod. A thin smile curved her lips — a smile that held a secret.

"Of course, Bianca. See you tomorrow night."

She walked out, leaving behind a dining room now buzzing with whispered schemes — Bianca and Diana already deep in discussion about which gowns, handbags, and jewelry would best ensnare the Sterling heir.

"They have no idea, Kira thought, as she crossed through the foyer toward the garage to get her car. I could buy the entire Sterling estate if I wanted to."

Meanwhile, in a penthouse high above the glittering city skyline, Adrian Sterling had just ended a video call. At thirty-three, he sat in a gray hoodie and sweatpants — a far cry from the image of a property and tech CEO.

Across from him, his father Richard Sterling occupied a leather wingback chair, legs crossed, expression serious.

"So you've decided, Adrian?"

Adrian leaned back into the sofa and let out a long breath. "I'll meet them tomorrow, Dad. But I'm not agreeing to an engagement on the spot. I don't do arranged marriages. Especially not with some twenty-year-old party girl who's only interested in my bank account."

"Her name is Bianca Ashford. She is only twenty," Richard conceded. "But the business needs this, son."

"A solid business isn't built on a fragile marriage." Adrian picked up his phone. His fingers began typing rapidly. "I want to know who this girl really is. I want to see what she's like when nobody's watching."

Richard eyed his son with open skepticism. "How, exactly? You going to stalk her?"

Adrian's mouth curved into a crooked grin — the kind of smile that told Richard his son had already cooked up something insane.

"Not stalk. I'm going to walk right in. But not as Adrian Sterling." He paused. "I'm going to be Ryan."

Richard blinked. "Ryan? Who's Ryan?"

"The name I'll use to go undercover inside their household. I've already built a fake resume — perfect background as a professional driver between jobs."

Richard barked out a laugh, genuine disbelief on his face. "You've lost your mind, Adrian. A CEO of a billion-dollar company going undercover as a chauffeur? If Harrison finds out, he'll have your head."

"Exactly. Which is why you need to keep this quiet." Adrian's voice dropped, all traces of amusement gone. "Tomorrow night, I'll meet them as Adrian — observe Bianca from a distance. And the night after that... Ryan starts work at the Ashford house."

He turned toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city sprawling beneath him like a circuit board of light. His expression had sharpened into something focused and hungry.

Richard shook his head. "You're gambling your reputation."

"I'm gambling my life, Dad. And I need to make sure I'm not betting on the wrong horse."
