The light did not fade gently.
It shattered—bursting outward in a violent surge that knocked Liora from her feet and tore a cry from her throat. The Veiled Crossing screamed, stone cracking beneath them as magic tore through the air like a living thing. Kael caught her again, wrapping his arms around her as the world convulsed.
“Hold on to me!” he shouted.
She did—clutching him as if he were the only solid thing left in existence.
Then, just as suddenly, the magic collapsed inward.
Silence fell.
Liora lay gasping against Kael’s chest, her ears ringing, her body humming with power that felt too large for her to contain. The Crossing was scarred now—fractured runes glowing dimly, mist recoiling from the center as though afraid.
Kael eased her upright, his expression tight with concern. “Are you hurt?”
She shook her head, though her hands trembled. “No. Just… changed.”
He understood. She could see it in his eyes.
Before either of them could speak again, the air rippled.
A figure emerged from the mist—tall, draped in robes the color of ash, their face hidden beneath a hood stitched with sigils of old authority. The ground bent slightly beneath their feet, as though reality itself recognized them.
Liora’s blood ran cold.
An Oracle.
“No,” Kael muttered. “This place was supposed to be hidden.”
“Nothing bound by destiny remains hidden for long,” the Oracle said, their voice echoing unnaturally, layered with many tones. “Especially not love-bound magic.”
Liora’s instinct was to step back—but she forced herself to stand her ground.
“You have no right to be here,” she said.
The Oracle’s head tilted. “Child, I was here before your kingdom learned to name magic.”
Kael moved subtly in front of her.
“What do you want?” he demanded.
“To warn you,” the Oracle replied. “And to condemn you, if you choose to be foolish.”
The mist thickened, forming images around them—visions suspended in the air like shattered mirrors. Liora saw cities in ruin, crowns broken, rivers running black with ash.
Every destined bond in history ended the same way,” the Oracle said. “With loss.”
Liora’s throat tightened. “Loss of what?”
The Oracle turned to her fully.
“Of what you love most.”
The words struck like a blade.
Kael’s jaw clenched. “You don’t know that.”
“I know inevitability,” the Oracle answered. “Destiny demands balance. Two souls bound so tightly cannot both remain whole.”
The visions shifted.
Liora saw herself standing alone on a battlefield, screaming Kael’s name.
Then Kael—kneeling before a throne, crownless, bloodied, reaching for someone who was no longer there.
She cried out, pressing her hands to her eyes. “Stop!”
The images vanished.
The Oracle’s voice softened—not kindly, but truthfully. “One of you will be taken. Power. Life. Freedom. Love itself. Fate has not yet decided which.”
Kael turned to Liora, pain and resolve warring in his gaze. “I won’t let it be you.”
Her heart broke at the certainty in his voice.
“You don’t get to decide that alone,” she said fiercely.
The Oracle watched them both. “You have three paths,” they said. “Sever the bond now, and live broken but alive. Continue it, and face sacrifice. Or attempt the impossible—defy destiny itself.”
Kael laughed bitterly. “And what happens then?”
The Oracle’s eyes glowed faintly beneath the hood.
“Then the world will demand payment.”
Silence stretched.
Liora looked at Kael—at the man who felt like fate and choice entwined, at the love forming faster than fear could stop it. She remembered her mother’s words.
Anything worth loving will demand everything.
She stepped forward.
“We choose to continue,” she said.
Kael’s breath caught. “Liora—”
“I know,” she whispered. “And I still choose you.”
The Oracle regarded her for a long moment.
“So be it.”
With a sweep of their hand, the mist closed in, and the Oracle vanished as suddenly as they had come.
The Veiled Crossing began to crumble.
Kael grabbed Liora’s hand. “We have to move—now.”
As they ran, the ground collapsing behind them, Liora felt it—deep, undeniable certainty.
Love had been chosen.
And destiny had taken note.
