The following morning, the set of The Gravity Between Us was suffocating. The air was thick with the smell of damp asphalt and the artificial fog machines, but the real chill came from the production tent.
Lukas sat in a director’s chair that had been moved specifically for him—center stage, elevated, and positioned so he could see every bead of sweat on the actors' faces.
He was sipping a green juice, his eyes hidden behind dark, reflective lenses, watching Ji-Hoon and Taemin like a hawk waiting for a rabbit to twitch.
"I want total immersion," Lukas called out, his voice smooth and lethally calm. "The scene is the 'Parting of Ways.' You’ve just discovered your bodyguard is a spy. I want to see disgust, Taemin. I want to see you look at him like he’s the dirt beneath your boots."
Ji-Hoon stood ten feet away, his face a granite mask. He hadn't looked at Taemin once since the call for 'Places.' His pulse was a steady, rhythmic thrum in his ears—the same calm he felt right before he had to jump off a burning building.
"Action!" Sora yelled.
Taemin turned. The transformation was startling. The warmth Ji-Hoon had felt in the trailer just hours ago was gone. Taemin’s eyes were cold, his upper lip curling in a sneer that looked painfully genuine.
"You really thought I’d care?" Taemin spat, stepping into Ji-Hoon’s space. He leaned in so close their noses almost touched—a mirror of their intimacy in the gym, but twisted into a weapon. "You're a tool, Ji-Hoon. A shadow. You’re paid to take the hits so I don't have to. Don't mistake a paycheck for a connection."
The words stung, even though Ji-Hoon knew they were scripted. Taemin was good. He was using the fear and anger he felt toward Lukas and channeling it directly into Ji-Hoon.
Ji-Hoon didn't flinch. He reached out and grabbed Taemin’s shoulder—hard enough to leave a mark, a deliberate move to sell the "hostility" to the cameras. "And you're just a face on a billboard, Taemin. Empty. Plastic. I’d rather bleed for a stranger than catch a fall for you again."
"Cut!" Sora screamed, looking thrilled. "Perfect! The tension is... it’s palpable! I could smell the hatred!"
Lukas leaned forward, his sunglasses sliding down his nose. He looked satisfied, but there was still a flicker of suspicion in his eyes. "Better," he murmured. "Much better. But let’s see if that hostility holds up during the harness work. Take a fifteen-minute break."
The Hidden Heat
The moment the cameras stopped, the two men turned away from each other without a word. Ji-Hoon headed for the equipment rack, while Taemin ducked into a small gap between two massive sound blankets to "re-apply his makeup."
Ji-Hoon followed a moment later, ostensibly to check the safety harness stored in that area.
As soon as he stepped behind the heavy black curtains, a hand shot out and grabbed his tactical vest, pulling him into the darkness. Ji-Hoon’s back hit the soundproofing foam with a muffled thud, and suddenly, Taemin was there, his face buried in Ji-Hoon’s neck.
"Did I go too far?" Taemin whispered, his voice shaking. The 'cold actor' was gone, replaced by the man who was terrified of losing the only real thing he’d found in years. "The 'plastic' comment... did you mean it?"
Ji-Hoon wrapped his arms around Taemin, shielding him from the view of anyone passing by. He could feel Taemin’s heart racing through the thin fabric of his costume.
"Every word I said was a lie," Ji-Hoon rasped, his lips grazing Taemin’s ear. "You were brilliant. Lukas bought it. He thinks he’s won, which makes him sloppy."
Taemin pulled back just enough to look at him. In the dim, filtered light, his eyes were blown wide with adrenaline and desire. "He’s watching us, Ji-Hoon. He’s going to try something today. I can feel it."
"Let him try," Ji-Hoon said. He reached down, his hand finding the small of Taemin’s back, pulling him flush against his hips. The "hostility" from the scene had mutated into a fierce, protective hunger. "I’m the one holding the wires, Taemin. I’m the one who decides when you land."
Taemin reached up, his fingers tangling in Ji-Hoon’s hair, pulling his head down for a hard, brief, and scorching kiss—a desperate reassurance before they had to go back out and pretend to be enemies.
The Sabotage
The break ended. The crew moved to the "Rooftop" set—a platform thirty feet above the studio floor. This was the most dangerous stunt of the week: Taemin would be chased to the edge and forced to leap into a void, caught only by a single safety wire controlled by Ji-Hoon.
Lukas stood at the base of the platform, whispering to one of the technicians.
As Ji-Hoon strapped Taemin into the harness, his fingers brushed against the metal carabiner. He froze. The locking mechanism felt... gritty. Like someone had poured fine sand or an acidic solvent into the hinge. If it took a high-velocity impact, it wouldn't lock. It would snap.
Ji-Hoon looked down at Lukas. The producer was looking at his watch, a faint, cruel smirk on his lips.
"Everything okay, Coach?" Taemin asked, noticing Ji-Hoon’s sudden stillness.
Ji-Hoon didn't answer immediately. He looked at the wire, then at the man he loved, then at the man who was trying to break them.
"Change of plans," Ji-Hoon whispered, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "We’re not doing the harness leap."
"What? Sora will lose it," Taemin hissed.
"Lukas sabotaged the clip," Ji-Hoon said, his eyes locking onto Taemin’s. "He wants you to fall. He wants me to be the one who let it happen."
Taemin’s face went pale, but he didn't panic. He looked at the thirty-foot drop, then back at Ji-Hoon. "Then what do we do?"
"We give him a show he didn't pay for," Ji-Hoon said. He reached for his own belt, unhooking a secondary, reinforced climbing rope. "We’re going to jump together. No wires. Just me holding you."
"Ji-Hoon, that’s insane. That’s not a stunt, that’s a suicide pact," Taemin whispered, a hysterical laugh bubbling in his chest.
"Trust the physics, Taemin," Ji-Hoon said, wrapping the rope around his own forearm and snapping it onto a structural beam.
"And trust me. I’ve never missed a catch in my life."
