The village slept quietly beneath a broken moon.

Cold wind moved through the narrow streets. Lanterns flickered.

KAITO walked home with a bundle of firewood on his back.

KAITO (thought):

“Why does it feel so silent tonight…?”

A scream pierced the air.

KAITO froze.

Another scream followed. Then another.

Fire exploded from the far end of the village.

KAITO:

“No…”

He dropped the firewood and ran.

Houses burned. Smoke filled the sky. Shadows moved unnaturally between the flames.

KAITO stumbled over a body.

KAITO:

“Father…?”

No response.

Blood soaked the ground.

KAITO’s breath shook.

A low laugh echoed behind him.

DEMON:

“Such a beautiful night.”

KAITO turned.

A demon stood there—tall, pale, eyes glowing red. Its smile was wide and cruel.

KAITO stepped back.

KAITO:

“Why… why are you doing this?”

DEMON:

“Because you humans cry so nicely.”

The demon vanished.

KAITO felt a sharp pain in his arm and fell.

KAITO screamed.

The demon appeared above him, claws raised.

DEMON:

“Let me end this.”

A sudden flash.

SLASH.

The demon’s arm fell to the ground.

The demon screamed.

A man stood between Kaito and the demon.

He wore a worn cloak and carried a sword stained black.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Move away, boy.”

The demon lunged again.

MASTER SEIJO inhaled deeply.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Breathing… First Form.”

One clean strike.

The demon’s head rolled across the ground.

Silence returned.

Kaito stared, shaking.

KAITO:

“Who… are you?”

MASTER SEIJO:

“Someone who hunts monsters.”

He turned to Kaito.

MASTER SEIJO:

“This world is cruel. If you stay weak, it will devour you.”

Kaito clenched his fists.

KAITO:

“Teach me.”

MASTER SEIJO paused.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Training means pain. Loss. Death.”

KAITO:

“I don’t care.”

The man studied him for a long moment.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Then follow me.”

CHAPTER 2: BREATH UNDER THE MOON

Rain fell in the mountains.

Kaito collapsed onto the mud, coughing.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Again.”

KAITO struggled to stand.

KAITO:

“My body won’t move…”

MASTER SEIJO:

“Your body lies. Your breath does not.”

Kaito raised his sword.

His hands shook.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Breathe in. Slowly. Deeply.”

Kaito inhaled.

His chest burned.

MASTER SEIJO:

“Control it. Feel the flow.”

Kaito exhaled.

The rain slowed in his vision.

KAITO (thought):

“My heart… it’s calmer.”

MASTER SEIJO:

“Now strike.”

Kaito swung.

The blade cut clean through a wooden post.

Kaito stared.

KAITO:

“I did it…”

MASTER SEIJO:

“This is only the beginning.”

CHAPTER 3: THE FIRST DEMON HUNT

Night returned.

A village bell rang in the distance.

Kaito stood on a rooftop, sword at his side.

KAITO (thought):

“I won’t run anymore.”

A demon crawled from the shadows.

DEMON:

“You smell familiar… fear.”

Kaito inhaled.

Moonlight reflected on his blade.

KAITO:

“Moon Breathing… First Form.”

He vanished.

SLASH.

The demon froze.

Its head fell.

Kaito stood still, breathing hard.

KAITO (thought):

“I’m still alive.”

The moon shone above him.
