The journey to the North was not a flight; it was a conquest. As Justine crossed the Great Frost Line, the air turned so cold it felt like breathing glass. Behind her, the warmth of the Capital—and the suffocating lies of Red—felt like a fever dream she had finally broken.
Duke Alaric led her to Winter’s Reach, a fortress carved directly into the side of a jagged mountain. It was a place of iron, stone, and absolute honesty. There were no secret carriage routes here; in the North, the paths were straight, or you fell into the abyss.
"This is not a villa, Justine," Alaric said as they stood on the high battlements, looking out over a sea of white. "There are no servants to brush your hair while they whisper gossip. Here, everyone carries a blade. Including you."
For the first three months, Alaric was not a lover, nor was he the "Enemy." He was a ghost from her past who became her most brutal teacher.
He didn't give her sweet messages in the morning. Instead, he gave her a weighted broadsword. He didn't ask if she was "exhausted"; he pushed her until her muscles screamed, then told her to strike again.
"Red taught you to be a flower that he could pluck and put in a vase," Alaric said, parrying her strike with a flick of his wrist. "I am teaching you to be the winter that kills the flower."
During their sparring sessions, Alaric revealed more about their shared regression. In the previous timeline, after Justine had died, Alaric’s North was burned to the ground by Red’s scorched-earth policies. Red had used Justine’s death as a political "martyrdom" to incite a war against the North.
"He used your corpse to build his Empire," Alaric growled, pinning her against the stone wall, their breaths mingling in the freezing air. "He didn't just cheat on you, Justine. He desecrated your memory."
Justine’s eyes burned with a cold fire. She realized now that her "respectful" Red was a sociopath who viewed people as stepping stones.
One evening, a raven arrived from the Capital. It carried a message with the seal of House Red.
Justine opened it. Even on parchment, Red’s "voice" was the same—gentle, pleading, and manipulative.
"My dearest Justine, I know the Northman has taken you by force. My heart bleeds every day you are in that monster's clutches. I am gathering the Imperial Legion to 'rescue' you. Just hold on, my peace. I will bring you home to our villa. I have found a new route—one where no one will ever find us. I love you more than life itself."
Justine threw the letter into the hearth. She watched it turn to ash.
"He’s coming," she said, her voice devoid of fear. "He’s calling it a rescue mission."
Alaric stepped out of the shadows, his silver mask discarded. His face was scarred but strikingly handsome in the firelight. "He’s bringing twelve thousand men. He wants his 'resting place' back. He wants the woman who knows his secrets silenced."
Justine picked up her new sword—a blade of Northern steel, etched with the crest of the fallen House Valerius.
"He thinks I'm a maiden in a tower," Justine said, a dark smile playing on her lips. "He doesn't realize that the woman he's coming to 'save' is the one who’s going to open the gates and lead the charge against him."
Alaric walked over to her, his hand resting on the hilt of her sword. "You still hate me for what I did to your father’s troops in the past, don't you?"
Justine looked up at him. She saw the man who had been her enemy, but who was now the only one standing in the breach with her.
"I hated the monster the Capital told me you were. But the 'monster' is the only one who gave me a sword and told me to fight my own battles."
She leaned in, her lips inches from his.
"Julian loved me and left me. Red loved me and lied to me. You... you just stood your ground and waited for me to wake up."
Alaric didn't pull away. "I didn't wait for you to wake up, Justine. I waited for you to become the storm I knew you were."
In the distance, the horns of the Imperial Legion began to wail. The "rescue" had begun. But it wasn't a girl they would find at the gates of Winter’s Reach. It was the Duchess of Frost, ready to turn the "Gilded Moon" into a "Crimson Dawn."
