Chapter 5- Building Bounds and Undercovering Secrets

The morning sun filtered softly through the curtains as Lila prepared breakfast.

The aroma of fresh bread and porridge filled the kitchen, a small comfort in the unfamiliar body she now inhabited.

The oldest child sat at the table, arms crossed, scowling, but his eyes followed her movements.

Lila set down his plate carefully, offering a gentle smile.

“Try it,” she said softly. “I made it for you.”

He hesitated, glaring suspiciously. Then, slowly, he picked up the spoon.

It was the first time he had eaten something she made without complaint.

A small victory, but one she cherished like gold.

After breakfast, Lila decided it was time to explore the house more thoroughly.

She had discovered the letters yesterday, but she suspected there were other secrets — journals, hidden notes, things that could reveal the mother’s past mistakes.

Understanding them could help her avoid repeating them.

In the study, tucked behind a false panel in the bookshelf, she found an old journal.

The handwriting was elegant, precise, but the words were sharp and bitter.

"They never listen. They are ungrateful. Everything falls apart because no one respects me."

Lila read carefully, heart aching.

The mother had not always been cruel, but her pain had twisted into harshness, neglect, and resentment.

I will not become like this, Lila vowed.

Outside, the children played in the garden under the watchful eyes of Kael.

He had taken a seat on the porch, silently observing, but the tension radiating from him was palpable.

Kael approached cautiously, the oldest child trailing behind reluctantly.

“Do you want to see something?” she asked softly, holding out a small flower she had picked.

The oldest child hesitated, then accepted it. His fingers brushed hers.

It was a tiny connection, almost imperceptible, but it made her heart swell.

The youngest and middle children giggled nearby, chasing butterflies, and for a moment, Lila allowed herself to imagine a life where this family could truly be happy.

As evening fell, a storm approached. Dark clouds rolled in, lightning streaked the sky, and the wind howled through the trees.

Lila lit candles in the house, keeping the children close.

The oldest child shivered, hiding behind her.

She held him gently, whispering, “It’s okay. I’m here. Nothing will hurt you.”

Outside, Kael watched silently, his presence both reassuring and intimidating.

He gestured toward the window — a warning to stay safe.

Lila nodded, understanding the silent message.

The storm passed, leaving the garden glistening with rain.

Lila tucked the children into bed, feeling a strange warmth in her chest.

Step by step, trust can be built, she thought. And someday… this family will be whole again, putting confidence in herself. Not knowing that Kael was watching her from the door thinking she was planing something to gain all of the their trust.

The youngest believe that his mother is starting to love them, but the oldest and middle does not believe in her for all of what she has done to them for the past years.
