More Than Yesterday, Less Than Tomorrow

More Than Yesterday, Less Than Tomorrow

The day the Universe leaned in

Julian had learned how to live quietly.

With strict parents and locked doors disguised as protection ,the world existed for her mostly through screens and melodies she wrote alone in her room. Music was her escape, the only place she felt brave. After her last relationship, bravery came with fear. Love had once promised safety and left her wounded.

Her cousin worried about her.

“You need to live,” she would say. “You need to date. You need love.”

Julian disagreed. Love felt risky. People left. Hearts broke. She was content staying where it was safe.

So her cousin took matters into her own hands.

One evening, Julian’s phone lit up with a message from a name she did not recognize. Hey, I’m Smurf. Your cousin told me I should text you. Julian stared at the screen suspiciously. Another setup. Another disappointment waiting to happen.

She almost ignored it.

Smurf, on the other hand, had been curious from the start. A social bug with a camera always close, he loved meeting new people and hearing their stories. A cinematographer with an eye for emotion, he was drawn to things that felt real. When Julian’s cousin spoke about her quiet talent and guarded heart, he wanted to know more.

Their first conversation was simple. A little awkward. Then surprisingly easy.

They talked about music, films, and dreams they had not said out loud to many people. Smurf asked thoughtful questions. Julian answered carefully. She kept her walls up, reminding herself not to get attached.

Days turned into conversations that lasted too long. Messages turned into voice notes. Smurf stayed consistent, never pushing, never disappearing. Julian noticed that. It unsettled her in the best way.

She told him the truth. That she had been hurt. That she was unsure. That she did not trust easily.

Smurf listened.

“I’m not here to rush you,” he said. “I just want to know you.”

So they kept talking. Laughing. Sharing pieces of themselves slowly. Somewhere between midnight messages and shared creativity, friendship formed naturally. With Smurf, Julian felt free without leaving her room.

They became best friends before anything else.

And without realizing when it happened, friendship softened into love. Quiet, patient, and real.

The universe had done what it always does when the timing is right.

It introduced two souls who were not looking, but ready.

Then came the idea of meeting.

They chose the library. Quiet. Safe. Neutral. Julian agreed, then immediately regretted it. Her hands shook the entire way there. Her heart raced with every step.

When she walked into the library, the air felt heavier. She scanned the room nervously. Aisle after aisle of books. No sign of him. She took a few steps forward, turned a corner, and suddenly bumped into someone.

She looked up.

So did he.

Time paused. Eyes locked. Something unmistakable passed between them. It felt like recognition, like destiny finally catching up. Love at first sight, soft but overwhelming.

They hugged instinctively, like they had known each other longer than they had. They sat at a nearby desk, close enough that their knees brushed. Conversation flowed effortlessly. Music. Film. Dreams. Silence that did not feel awkward.

Julian stood up to browse and wandered toward the Guinness World Records section. When she turned back, Smurf was filming her, capturing her smile, her nervous energy, the way she existed so naturally. She blushed and turned away, shy. He smiled like he had just found his favorite shot.

She sat back down, heart pounding.

“I think I’m in love,” she whispered. “But I’m scared.”

Smurf did not hesitate.

“I love you,” he said gently. “And I will protect you. I will reassure you. I am here.”

In that quiet library, between books and borrowed courage, the universe smiled.

Their love story had truly begun.
