Chapter 3

The wedding hall glittered with an opulent display of white roses, flowing silk, and crystal chandeliers. It was a scene plucked straight from a romantic drama, designed to evoke awe and joy. For Jungkook, walking down the aisle, every step was a beat in a hopeful symphony. He wore his finest suit, tailored to perfection, his heart thrumming with a mix of nerves and an earnest desire for this new beginning to truly be beautiful. He scanned the faces of their assembled guests – his beaming parents, his supportive best friend Jimin offering a thumbs-up from the crowd, and a sea of smiling relatives and acquaintances. To them, this was a union of two well-respected families, a match made in heaven.

He reached the altar, his gaze fixed on the entrance where Taehyung would appear. A hush fell over the room. And then, there he was. Kim Taehyung.

Taehyung moved like a specter, his traditional wedding attire, pristine and elegant, doing little to mask the subtle tension in his shoulders. His face, usually so expressive in his art, was a mask of serene composure, betraying nothing of the turmoil Jungkook knew brewed beneath the surface. He was undeniably breathtaking, a vision in white that made Jungkook's breath catch in his throat. His hair, styled impeccably, framed sharp features that could have been carved from marble, and his eyes, though downcast, held a profound depth that tugged at something within Jungkook.

As Taehyung slowly walked towards him, flanked by his two older brothers, Seokjin and Namjoon, Jungkook offered a small, reassuring smile, a silent plea for connection. Taehyung's gaze flickered up for a fleeting second, his eyes meeting Jungkook's. There was no warmth, no recognition, just a blankness that sent a shiver down Jungkook's spine. It was a moment that lasted only an instant, swallowed by the grandeur of the ceremony, but it was enough to dim the bright anticipation in Jungkook's heart.

The rituals unfolded like a meticulously choreographed play. They bowed, exchanged rings – a cold band of gold sliding onto Jungkook's finger, a solemn promise – and performed every customary gesture with practiced grace. Their hands touched briefly, formally, a fleeting contact that felt strangely devoid of energy. The air was thick with unspoken words, with the weight of promises that felt heavy and hollow. When the officiant declared them wed, a wave of applause erupted, but to Jungkook, it sounded muffled, distant. He managed a smile, a polite curve of his lips, but inside, a knot of apprehension began to tighten.

During the elaborate reception that followed, they were paraded as the perfect couple. Cameras flashed, relatives offered effusive congratulations, and old family friends pinched their cheeks. Jungkook played his part flawlessly, his RJ charm in full effect, laughing easily, making small talk, and always keeping a gentle hand on Taehyung's back or waist when expected. Taehyung, however, remained a silent, elegant presence by his side. He offered polite, almost imperceptible smiles, nodded at greetings, and spoke only when directly addressed, his voice soft, almost fragile.

Jungkook tried to engage him, whispering comments about the food, the music, the endless stream of well-wishers. Taehyung would respond with monosyllables or a faint nod, his eyes often drifting away, as if searching for an escape route. Jungkook could feel the subtle withdrawal, the invisible wall Taehyung had erected around himself. He understood, intellectually, that Taehyung was suffering, trapped in a situation he hadn't wanted. But the reality of it, the profound distance between them on a day meant for unity, was a colder realization than he had anticipated.

As the night drew to a close and they finally bid farewell to the last guests, Jungkook felt an exhaustion that went beyond physical tiredness. The performance had been draining. He looked at Taehyung, who stood a little apart, his shoulders slumped, the vibrant life that had captivated Jungkook in the portrait now seemingly extinguished. The silence in the car ride back to their new apartment was deafening, filled only with the hum of the engine and the unspoken truths that lay heavy between them. This wasn't just a ceremony of strangers; it was the quiet, almost imperceptible beginning of a year that promised to be nothing short of complicated.
