Chapter 1

The rain had slowed to a gentle drizzle when Amanda pushed open the door to the small bookstore where she worked. The bell above chimed softly, announcing her arrival, and she shook her umbrella, sending a few droplets skittering across the tiled floor. The smell of fresh books and brewed coffee greeted her, but it couldn’t chase away the emptiness in her chest.

Her little brother, Leo, came running in moments later, backpack bouncing on his shoulders and shoes squeaking against the wet floor. “Amanda! The puddles outside are huge!” he shouted, shaking water from his hood and splattering the tile.

Amanda laughed softly, crouching to ruffle his hair. “Then you better watch your step, or you’ll ruin your homework too.”

Leo grinned and darted between the shelves, exploring as he always did. Amanda smiled faintly, feeling a warmth that hadn’t been there in a while. It was small, fleeting, but it reminded her that life went on even when her heart felt broken.

She tucked her hair behind her ear and began arranging the new books, trying to push away the memories that never seemed far. Even now, she could feel the ache that lingered in her chest, the kind that came from losing someone she had loved deeply. She shook her head, pressing her fingers against her mug of coffee, trying to ground herself in the present.

“Morning, Amanda,” called Mia, her coworker, stacking a pile of newly arrived novels. “You look… tired. Everything okay?”

Amanda forced a small smile. “Just… the weather,” she replied, hoping the tremor in her voice went unnoticed.

Mia tilted her head, unconvinced. “Uh-huh. Sure. The weather, and… your thoughts, maybe?”

Amanda’s stomach tightened. She looked down, pretending to adjust a book. “I’m fine,” she said quickly, her voice firmer than she felt.

She glanced at her phone and remembered the interview she had scheduled later that week. Her heart fluttered a little with nervous excitement. I have to earn more… I have to do this for myself, she thought. Taking a deep breath, she said aloud to Mia, “I’ve got an interview tomorrow. It’s a big opportunity… I really want this. I need to earn enough to start saving properly.”

Mia smiled, giving her an encouraging pat on the shoulder. “You’ll do amazing. You always do. Just be yourself, and they’ll see how capable you are.”

Amanda nodded, feeling a small surge of determination. She knew it wouldn’t be easy, but she was tired of waiting for life to happen. She would make it happen herself no matter how heavy her heart felt.

By midday, the rain had completely stopped, and the clouds were slowly giving way to soft sunlight. Amanda stepped outside for a moment, coffee in hand, letting the fresh air wash over her. She watched the city streets glisten with leftover puddles, the gentle reflections of lights on the wet pavement almost hypnotic.

She let herself take a deep breath, appreciating the small, quiet moments the way the steam rose from her coffee, the soft chatter of people passing by, the distant hum of traffic. These little pieces of life reminded her that even when her heart felt heavy, there were still moments worth noticing.

Amanda turned back inside, smiling faintly as Leo’s laughter rang from between the shelves. She let herself feel that small, stubborn spark inside her chest the part that refused to give up on life, no matter how much her heart ached.

Even after heartbreak, even after loss, she knew she had to keep moving forward. For herself, for her little brother, for the tiny pieces of happiness that still existed in the everyday moments.
