Blood line and smiles made of glass

Serena Vale arrived like a storm wrapped in silk.

I knew she had entered the compound before anyone announced it—not because of sound, but because the air shifted. People moved faster, spoke softer. Even the guards straightened like they’d suddenly remembered fear was a muscle that needed exercise.

I was halfway through pretending to inventory weapons I absolutely was not cleared to touch when Eli whispered urgently in my ear.

“Kael. New presence. High-level. Female.

Same genetic echo as Lucien.”

I froze. “That’s not terrifying at all.”

“That’s his mother,” Eli added. “And—oh. Oh no.”

“Oh no what?” I hissed.

“She’s an Alpha. A pure one.”

I inhaled slowly. Exhaled slower.

“Of course she is.”

Serena Vale swept into the main hall wearing ivory, her silver hair pinned elegantly, eyes sharp enough to cut steel. She smiled constantly, the kind of smile that never reached the soul because it didn’t need to.

The room bowed to her without her asking.

Lucien approached her immediately.

“Mother,” he said.

She cupped his face gently, inspecting him like fine art. “You’ve lost weight.”

“Work,” he replied.

Her eyes flicked past him—straight to me.

I swear my soul left my body, wrote a will, and ascended.

“And who is this?” she asked lightly.

Lucien stepped half a pace forward.

“My assistant.”

Assistant.

Wow. I really climbed the ranks. From fake omega to assistant. Next stop: corpse.

Serena glided toward me, gaze unwavering. I lowered my head respectfully, heart screaming.

“You’re very calm,” she said.

“I try,” I replied honestly. “It’s either that or scream.”

Her lips twitched. “Honest. Good.”

She reached up—too fast for me to react—and touched just below my jaw.

I felt it instantly.

Pressure.

Testing.

I didn’t flinch. Not because I was brave.

Because I was terrified and my body locked up like a malfunctioning robot.

“You don’t smell like what you are,” she said softly.

Lucien’s presence shifted instantly.

Dangerous. Possessive.

“Mother,” he said flatly.

She withdrew her hand. Smiled wider.

“How interesting,” she murmured. “Lucien, walk with me.”

They left together, surrounded by silence.

I slumped against the wall the second they were gone.

Eli cursed violently in my ear. “She almost clocked you.”

“She did clock me,” I whispered. “She just didn’t say it out loud.”

“You need extraction.”

“I can’t,” I replied.

There was a pause. “Why not?”

I closed my eyes.

“Because if I leave now,” I said, “Lucien will follow.”

And that scared me more than staying.

That night, Serena summoned me.

Because of course she did.

Her private quarters smelled faintly of tea and old power. She gestured for me to sit. I did, carefully. Like someone who suspected the chair might explode.

“You’ve been with my son for years,” she said, pouring tea. “What do you think of him?”

Direct. Brutal.

“I think,” I said slowly, “he carries more weight than anyone should.”

She hummed. “And yet he doesn’t break.”

“No,” I agreed. “He bends the world instead.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“Be careful, child,” she said softly. “Men like my son do not forgive betrayal.”

My pulse jumped.

“Good thing I’m loyal,” I said, smiling.

She smiled back.

Glass against glass.

“You are not an omega,” she said calmly.

The room went silent.

I laughed. Loud. Too loud.

“Oh thank God,” I blurted. “I’ve been terrible at pretending. Do you know how exhausting fake submissiveness is?”

She stared at me.

Then—she laughed.

Genuine. Sharp.

“You’re an Alpha,” she said.

“Yes,” I replied. “Surprise?”

Her gaze slid over me thoughtfully. “And yet…”

“And yet what?”

“You orbit my son.”

That stung more than it should have.

“I don’t have a choice,” I said quietly.

She studied me. “Ah. So you see it too.”

“See what?”

“The chain,” she replied. “And how tight it already is.”

I swallowed.

“What are you going to do?” I asked.

She sipped her tea. “Nothing.”

“What?”

“I want to see how this ends,” she said lightly. “Lucien’s instincts have chosen you. One way or another.”

That did not make me feel better.

Lucien confronted me afterward.

“You spoke with my mother,” he said.

“Yes,” I replied. “Lovely woman. Terrifying. Ten out of ten.”

His eyes searched my face.

“What did she say?”

“That you’re intense,” I joked. “Which shocked me.”

Silence.

Then he stepped closer.

“She told you what you are,” he said.

I didn’t deny it.

“And yet you stay.”

I met his gaze.

“Yes.”

Something dark and satisfied flickered in his eyes.

“Good,” he said quietly.

That night, Eli sent me one final message.

You’re in too deep. If you stay, you may not come back the same.

I stared at Lucien’s door across the hall.

“I know,” I whispered.

And for the first time—

I didn’t want to leave.
