Chapter Five — Thursday Afternoon

The library smelled faintly of books and polished wood, the kind of quiet that made Eli feel both calm and alert. Thursday afternoons were usually uneventful—an easy stretch before the weekend—but today, he found himself looking forward to it.

Noah was already there when Eli arrived, seated at their usual table, sleeves rolled up slightly, hair still damp from practice. A water bottle and a soccer ball rested on the floor beside him, marking him unmistakably as captain of the team.

“Hey,” Noah said, glancing up and smiling. “Right on time.”

Eli offered a small nod, setting down his notebook. “You’re early.”

“No, I just got here first,” Noah replied smoothly, already flipping open his notes. “Figured I’d get a head start.”

They fell into the usual rhythm, the quiet of concentration surrounding them. Eli sketched outlines and arguments while Noah asked pointed questions, occasionally suggesting angles Eli hadn’t considered. It was comfortable, almost natural, yet Eli couldn’t deny a certain electricity in the air—the kind that came from shared focus, small smiles, and quiet observation.

After about twenty minutes, Noah paused, stretching slightly. “So… are you going to the party tomorrow?” he asked casually, as if it were a trivial matter.

Eli froze. His pen hovered over the page. “I… I don’t know. Mara says I should, but…”

“But what?” Noah prompted, leaning on his elbow and giving him a curious look. “Scared of chaos?”

Eli flushed lightly. “Not exactly… I just don’t usually go to things like that.”

Noah’s eyes softened, thoughtful. “You’ll be fine. And…” He hesitated just enough to make Eli’s stomach twist. “…it’s not just a party. It’s… well, I’d like it if you came. For me.”

Eli blinked. “…For you?”

“Yeah,” Noah said, brushing a stray lock of hair back from his forehead. “I don’t know… you’re good at noticing things, right? You see details most people don’t. I’d like it if you were there.”

Eli’s mind went blank for a second. He wasn’t used to anyone asking him to be somewhere, let alone someone like Noah. The library had never felt smaller, the quiet around them suddenly more intimate.

“I—” Eli started, then stopped, unsure of how to respond.

Noah leaned back, letting the pause stretch. “It’s okay if you don’t want to. I get it. I just thought I’d ask. I mean…” He shrugged slightly, a casual gesture that made him seem both confident and vulnerable at the same time. “…I’d like to see you there. That’s all.”

Eli felt a heat creeping into his chest. The words weren’t demanding, weren’t teasing—they were genuine. He wanted to say yes, but his mind spun with questions. Would he be awkward? Would he stand in the corner like usual? Would Mara be yelling at him across the room?

“…Maybe,” Eli said finally, quietly.

Noah’s face lit up, subtle but noticeable. “Maybe? That’s basically a yes,” he said with a small grin, leaning back against his chair. “I’ll take it.”

Eli looked down at his notebook, pretending to write, though the words were meaningless. His heart was pounding—not from stress, but from something entirely different, something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel before.

They returned to the project, but the air was different now. Every glance, every brush of hands as they passed notes, seemed charged with a subtle tension that neither of them addressed directly. Eli found himself stealing glances at Noah, noticing the curve of his jaw, the focused tilt of his head, the way his eyes lingered on the notes before shifting briefly to him.

After a while, Noah stretched again, tossing a pencil lightly onto the table. “You’re really good at this,” he said softly. “I mean… at organizing and thinking things through. Makes it easier to work with you.”

Eli blinked. “Thanks,” he muttered, trying to ignore the warmth spreading in his chest.

The rest of the session passed with a quiet focus, but Eli’s thoughts kept wandering back to that smile, the invitation, the subtle hope in Noah’s eyes. The project was still important, yes—but suddenly, it felt like the party mattered more.

And for the first time, Eli didn’t feel entirely ready—or entirely willing—to resist.
