"You didn't tell me you were coming." Reneé said just as she pulled the front door open.
Micah stepped in, rocking a graphic tee and sweat pants. Her hair was pulled into a loose tail, leaving tiny strands of hair which framed her face.
She tucked her hands into her pockets, the minty air invading her nose.
"How fresh." she muttered, slumping down on one of the sofas.
"Is your mum home?"
"Nah, it's just me. Both are on a business trip." Reneé replied, joining her on the sofa.
"I wish everyone at home would do same." Micah huffed.
Reneé gave a light chuckle. " How've you been?"
" Good, got anything I can munch?" Micah asked hastily. She didn't want Reneé delving into her family affairs.
"Help yourself to the kitchen."
"Come on, I'm a guest. You should treat me like one" Micah said.
"Yeah, a guest that knows my house much better than me." Reneé said dramatically.
Micah threw the couch pillow at her, rolling her eyes and trying to ignore Renee's laughter.
A handful of strawberries, some grapes and slices of apple. That was enough.
"Reneé!" She called, seeing that the living room was empty.
"Up here."
She took the stairs to Renee's room, a crazy splash of pink, teal and cream. Her sheets were a dazzling white and her blanket, pastel pink.
A part of the room was covered with posters from her favorite movie. On the dressing table was a framed picture of the both of them after their first performance as freshers.
That was the beginning of their friendship.
Micah smiled to herself, running her fingers on the frame.
"We looked great."
Renee's voice came from behind. She had her cat, Myla in her arms.
" Myla, look how big you've grown!" Micah exclaimed, dropping her fruit bowl on the dressing table and taking the white tabby cat into her arms.
"She's gonna be a mommy soon." Reneé said happily.
Micah's eyes widened in surprise.
"That's amazing, you hear that Myla, you are going to be a mommy." Micah said, mimicking a deep male voice which had Reneé giggling.
Micah smiled, letting the cat on the floor while grabbing her bowl.
"What's up with you and that Larry guy?" Micah asked, tossing a strawberry into her mouth.
"He'll be traveling to Australia next week. We won't be seeing each other anymore." Reneé sighed.
Micah tried to cheer her up. "Come on, don't be sad. You could always find a better Larry."
" It's not so easy you know." Reneé said, dropping her head on one shoulder, her gaze falling.
They both let out a simultaneous sigh, chuckling.
The room grew silent for a while, giving room for personal thoughts. For Micah, thoughts about the mysterious job offer occupied her mind and she was yet to tell Reneé about it.
She was still contemplating on whether to tell Reneé or not to when Reneé suddenly sprang up.
"Hey, why don't you sleepover?" she asked.
"Sleepover, um...well..."
Renée pointed at her finger at her. ""Don't try to feed me that "shift" line because I know you've got no shifts today."
Micah raised an eyebrow. "How did you..."
"Doesn't matter. Just...come on, please? Renee's voice grew soft, staring at Micah with pleasing eyes.
Well, Renée might just be right. A day off from home won't harm and besides, going home would mean meeting an unsettled environment which she wasn't ready for.
" Alright," Micah groaned. "Sleepover it is."
"That's more like it. I'll get things ready." Reneé winked, dashing out of the room.
Micah chuckled, texting her dad about the latest update. She'll deal with whatever he had to say when she returns.
She tossed her phone aside, going downstairs and joining Reneé in the kitchen.
"What're we making?" Micah asked, putting on an apron.
"Brownies." Reneé replied, taking out ingredients.
Micah stood silent for a while. She had to tell Reneé about her job offer, somehow.
"Um..Ren?"
"Yeah?"
"Well..I..uh..got something to say to you." Micah began.
"Ok, what is it?" Reneé asked.
"I got a job..."
Her head snapped towards Micah. "You got a job?"
"Offer, a job offer." Micah said.
"How? When? Where? What kind?"
Micah giggled. "It just popped up mysteriously in the store's mailbox. I thought it was from the academy."
Renee tilted her head slightly. "That's strange."
"I thought so too, but I applied for it either ways. The salary is really promising."Micah said as she turned up the heat of the oven.
"Two thousand bucks."
Reneé mouth fell open, the ladle falling off her hand.
Micah threw her hands up. "Exactly, I mean who will be paying this much for a babysitting job?"
Renee faces her fully. "Babysitting? Girl that's way too much for a babysitting job."
"That's what I thought." Micah sighed.
Renee reached for Micah's hand, her voice softer. "Are you sure about this?"
Micah forced a smile. "I need the money. I think I can pull through I mean, what's there in babysitting a kid...or kids?"
Renee chuckled. "Just promise me you'll be fine."
"Can't promise. I have an interview tomorrow."
"An interview? For a babysitting job?" Renee asked, eyes widened in disbelief.
"Pretty professional right?"
"It's crazy!" Renee burst out laughing.
"Stop." Micah elbowed her.
"Don't forget to bring your CV along." Renee teased, dodging a handful of flour from Micah.
"I'm going home." Micah threatened, exhausted from chasing Renee.
"No we're just getting started." Renee sad, wiggling her eyebrows and dragging Micah along.
They lounged at the swimming pool area, gossiping about those secretly dating in their dance class, about their high school crushes and silly things they ever did for a guy's attention.
"Really, you didn't have to go singing Hurts so good when Jaden didn't even ask you out." Micah said, sipping juice.
"That was one time! And it did hurt when he started dating Michelle. Bad!" she protested.
Micah laughed, almost choking on her drink. "You were crazy!"
"Correction, I was naive." Renee replied, rolling her eyes.
"Sure you were."
That earned her a fry in the face.
"Seriously, you're crazy."
"And you're crazier."
Micah smiled. "I guess that makes two of us."
