The peace of the penthouse was shattered by a phone call that Evelyn had been dreading. Her father, unaware of the darkness hiding behind a handsome face, had officially invited Marcus Thorne to the family’s summer gala. In the first life, this was the night Evelyn had fallen for Marcus’s practiced charms. In this life, it was the day the wolf entered the sheepfold.
Evelyn stood before the mirror, trying to use makeup to hide the paleness of her skin. The white streak in her hair was now a thick, elegant silver ribbon. She looked like a winter queen, beautiful but fading.
"You don't have to go," Liam said, leaning against the doorframe. He was watching her with an intensity that made her heart ache. He had become her shadow, rarely leaving her side, his eyes constantly scanning her for signs of weakness.
"I have to," Evelyn whispered. "If I don't go, Marcus will target my father earlier. I need to be the distraction."
The gala was a sea of silk and champagne, but for Evelyn, it felt like walking through a graveyard. When Marcus finally approached her, his smile didn't reach his eyes. He looked at her with a strange, flickering recognition.
"Evelyn Sterling," Marcus murmured, taking her hand. His touch made her skin crawl. "I feel as though I’ve seen you in a dream. Or perhaps... a nightmare. You look different than the girl I heard about. You look like you’ve lived a thousand years."
"I've lived long enough to know a predator when I see one, Marcus," she snapped, pulling her hand away.
Marcus leaned in, his voice a cold hiss. "I keep seeing a bridge, Evelyn. I keep seeing you in the water. Does that mean anything to you?"
Evelyn’s breath hitched. He remembers. The universe hadn't just sent her back; it had left a trail for the villain to follow. Marcus wasn't just a thief in this life; he was a man reclaimed by his own malice.
Before Marcus could say more, a heavy hand landed on his shoulder. Liam stood there, his presence like a dark cloud. "She’s with me, Thorne. Find someone else to bother."
The tension between the two men was electric. Marcus laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "The Ice King has a heart after all. Take care of her, Vance. Fragile things tend to break when they fall."
As Marcus walked away, Evelyn’s vision blurred. The stress of the encounter triggered the "Tax." Her heart stuttered, and she collapsed against Liam’s chest. He caught her instantly, his face a mask of terror.
"Evelyn! Stay with me!"
He rushed her to a private room, away from the prying eyes of the elite. When she finally opened her eyes, she saw Liam sitting on the floor beside the sofa, his head in his hands. The powerful billionaire was trembling.
"I found a doctor," Liam said, his voice cracking. "A specialist. He says your vitals are like someone twice your age. He can't explain it."
"He won't be able to, Liam," Evelyn sighed, reaching out to stroke his hair. "It’s not a disease. It’s the price. I saved your company from Mark, and I saved you from Marcus tonight. That cost me a year. Maybe more."
Liam looked up, his blue eyes red-rimmed. "Then stop saving me! Let him take the money. Let him ruin the name. I don't care about being a billionaire, Evelyn. I just want to wake up and see you breathe."
"I can't stop," she said, a single tear trailing down her pale cheek. "Because Marcus remembers too. He won't stop until he sees that bridge again. If I don't stay ahead of him, he’ll take us both down."
Liam stood up, his fear turning into a cold, hard resolve. He wasn't just going to protect her anymore; he was going to go on the offensive. "If Marcus wants a war of memories, I'll give him one. But you... you are going to rest. I’m moving you to my estate by the sea. It’s the only place I can truly guard you."
He didn't know that by moving her, he was setting the stage for the final act. The sea was calling to them both, a reminder of the water that had once claimed them.
