The air in Richard’s basement was thick with a new, uneasy silence. When Robert, Gary, and Richard descended the stairs, they froze. Lisa was sitting with Eve, her expression uncharacteristically calm, as if the presence of a mysterious, tattooed girl in their hiding spot was the most natural thing in the world.
"You don't need to explain anything," Lisa said, her voice steady. "She already told me. Now, what I need to know is about the radio."
While the boys stood in stunned silence, a different kind of revelation was unfolding at the mortuary. The medical staff stood over the three cold slabs, their brows furrowed in confusion. As Joe watched, his eyes widened with a flicker of genuine fear. The features of the corpses began to ripple and liquefy, the identical masks of Gloria’s face melting away to reveal their true forms: two females and one male, strangers to the town of Pineview.
Terry burst into the room, his boots echoing against the tile. "Sir, we found the girl," he announced.
Joe’s fear instantly vanished, replaced by a dark, simmering rage that twisted his features into something jagged and predatory.
Sleep offered Robert no sanctuary. In his dream, he walked through the front door of his own home, but the familiar hallway was warped, the walls bleeding into a suffocating darkness. His mother, Gloria, appeared at the end of the hall. Her face was a portrait of terror, her voice a fragile reed in the wind.
"Come to me... save me... Please, Rob," she whispered.
Robert’s eyes snapped open in the basement, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The transition from the nightmare to the waking world felt paper-thin.
Across town, in the soft morning light of her bedroom, Julie sat upright on her bed. She wasn't sleeping. A thick book on monsters lay open in her lap. When Daniel stirred, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he looked up at her.
"Hey, you didn't sleep?" he asked, his voice husky.
Julie shook her head, her eyes wide and haunted. "Each time I close my eyes, all I can see is that thing. So I did some digging, and I think it's like a shark or something. The minute Eric burst your head open, it showed up. It's drawn to blood."
Daniel’s expression turned grim. He reached for his jacket. "You don't have to do this, Julie. Let's just act like none of this happened."
He climbed out the window, disappearing into the shadows just as Eric’s car pulled into the driveway, Scott, Jeff, and Stacy piling out with the engine still idling.
During break time at school, the trio huddled in a corner of the hallway. Robert recounted the dream, his voice trembling as he described his mother’s plea.
"We should check out your house then, right?" Gary said, his eyes lighting up with the thrill of the hunt.
Richard’s face fell. "But we don't even have keys. The place is a crime scene."
"I can help you with that."
They spun around to find Nancy leaning against the lockers, a knowing smirk playing on her lips.
Meanwhile, outside the Wilson residence, the atmosphere was volatile. Scott’s face was flushed with anger as he confronted Daniel. "So after saving the princess, you decided to sleep in her room?"
Daniel gave a curt nod, but Julie stepped between them before Eric could react. "No, no, Eric. I asked him to." She met Eric’s eyes, her voice firm. "I was scared, and I just needed someone."
The tension in Eric’s shoulders ebbed away, his expression softening into something like understanding. "Yeah, I know. I get it."
Scott and Jeff exchanged a look of pure disgust. "So now you're friends with the loser who took your girl?" Scott spat.
"Guys, please stop this!" Eric’s voice rose in a rare moment of authority. "Daniel saved me last night when you guys ran off like little babies."
The insult hit home. Scott lunged, his fist connecting with Eric’s jaw, and the yard erupted into a chaotic brawl. Lisa emerged from the house, rushing into the fray to pull them apart, while Eve watched the violence from the safety of the upstairs window, her eyes wide and unblinking.
Later, outside the Chief’s house, Robert looked at the key in his hand, then up at Nancy. "Why are you helping us?"
Nancy offered a small, surprisingly soft smile. "Because I want us to be friends," she said. The boys looked at each other, the unexpected kindness catching them off guard.
At the mortuary, the air was cold and smelled of formaldehyde. James looked at Matt, his face aged by the weight of what he knew. "They are very powerful, Matt."
Matt’s brow furrowed. "What are you saying?"
"I got a call," James said, his gaze dropping to the floor. "They said I should go back home. I'm being suspended for talking to you."
Matt’s jaw clenched. The walls were closing in, and the people trying to help him were being picked off one by one.
Back at the Wilson house, Lisa’s voice cracked like a whip as she ushered Jeff and Scott away from the property. "Get out of here! Now!"
"We never should have let you in!" Scott yelled back, his face contorted.
"And I never should have knocked!" Eric shouted, the guilt of the fight still fresh on his face.
As Scott and Jeff tore down the street, three black Nuclear Plant vans rounded the corner, their engines a low, ominous hum. Lisa’s blood ran cold. She turned and sprinted for Eve.
The girl was trembling, tears streaming down her face as she pointed at the approaching vehicles. "Bad Adult... Bad Adult..."
Lisa scooped the small girl into her arms and ran for Daniel’s car, shouting for Eric, Julie, and Daniel to follow. "Get in, now! Hide!" she screamed. Once they were inside, she slammed the door. "Drive!"
Daniel floored it, the tires screaming against the asphalt. Behind them, the vans lurched into pursuit. The teenagers stared at Eve in total shock.
"Lisa, what are you saying? Who is this girl?" Julie demanded, her voice rising in panic.
Behind them, the staff in the lead van leveled their weapons at the car. Daniel swerved, the speedometer climbing as the vans gained ground.
"Miss Green, you'd better start talking," Eric said, his voice laced with adrenaline-fueled shock.
"Just hold your horses," Lisa replied, her eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.
Suddenly, the lead van swerved with a roar, pulling ahead and skidding sideways to block their path. They were trapped. Eve’s small, pale hands rose, her fingers pointing toward the windshield...
At the sealed Robert residence, the yellow "No Entry" tape fluttered against the door. Robert, Nancy, Gary, and Richard slipped inside, moving like ghosts through the darkened house. Robert led them straight to his mother’s room—the room from his dream.
The floor was littered with hundreds of photographs. Robert fell to his knees, frantically shuffling through them, but his heart sank. "Why is there nothing?" his voice cracked, tears blurring his vision. Every single photograph was a void of white. "I saw her... I saw Mom calling me for help."
Gary knelt beside him, offering a steadying hand, while Richard picked up one of the blank squares and flipped it over. His eyes narrowed. Written in a jagged, hurried hand was a single word: Scratch.
At the Nuclear Plant, Chief Matt moved through the shadows, a ghost in the machine. He slipped past the patrols and found his way into a room lined with mirrors. On a central table sat a folder—Joe’s notes and a picture of Eve.
He didn't hear them coming. The security team swarmed him, their strikes heavy and precise. Matt’s scream echoed through the sterile halls before the darkness took him.
On the road, a blinding green light suddenly erupted from Eve’s outstretched palms. The glass of the car shattered outward as the energy slammed into the blocking van. The massive vehicle was tossed into the air like a toy, flipping end-over-end before crashing into the dirt in a heap of twisted metal.
Daniel didn't wait. He swung the car around the wreckage and sped away, the teenagers sat in a stunned, breathless silence.
From the second van, Joe stepped out into the road. He looked at the smoking ruins of the first vehicle, then toward the receding taillights of Daniel's car. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his face. He had found her.
