First Year Always You
Chapter One
Aeris Valenwood. That was my name, written in black ink on the class list and spoken aloud on the first morning like it belonged to someone who knew exactly where they were going. I was a first year in this school, standing among strangers who all seemed far more confident than I felt. The halls were wide and echoing, the walls lined with trophies and framed photographs of students who had already made their mark. I wondered if, one day, my name would ever belong somewhere like that.
At first, my days were simple. Wake up early, make sure my uniform was neat, arrive on time, and try not to get lost between classes. I observed more than I spoke. I listened to laughter that wasn’t meant for me and conversations that passed by like background noise. It was easier that way, staying unnoticed, staying safe.
Then there was her.
Maelis Elara Whitmore.
Her name alone caught my attention. It sounded fancy, almost unreal, like it belonged to a character from a novel rather than a student sitting two rows ahead of me. When the teacher called her name during attendance, it seemed to linger in the air for a moment longer than the others. I remember looking up without realizing I had done so, my curiosity already awake.
Maelis didn’t announce herself. She didn’t demand attention. She simply existed, and somehow that was enough. She walked through the halls with a quiet confidence, her presence calm but undeniable. When she spoke, people listened. When she laughed, it felt natural, effortless, as if she wasn’t trying to impress anyone at all.
I noticed the small things first. The way she tucked her hair behind her ear when she was thinking. The way her eyes lit up when a topic interested her. The way she smiled at her friends, genuine and warm, never forced. I told myself I was just being observant. That I was simply adjusting to my surroundings.
But feelings don’t arrive loudly. They slip in quietly, settling into your routine before you realize they’ve changed it.
Somewhere between shared glances in class and passing each other in the hallway, Maelis became the thought that followed me everywhere. I found myself looking forward to moments I couldn’t explain. A chance to see her across the room. A brief exchange of eye contact that made my heart beat faster than it should have.
I tried to be reasonable. I told myself it was just admiration. Then I called it a crush, something harmless, something that would fade with time. But the more days passed, the harder it became to pretend. Every smile she gave felt like it mattered. Every moment she was near made the rest of the world feel quieter.
I never spoke to her, not really. Not beyond polite words and passing acknowledgments. Yet she occupied a space in my thoughts that no one else did. It scared me, how something so unplanned could feel so real.
I was only a first year, still learning the rules of this place, still figuring out who I was supposed to be. And yet, without meaning to, I had already fallen into something deeper than I was prepared for.
This was not a grand love story. Not yet. It was the beginning, quiet and uncertain, filled with hesitation and hope. And as I stood in those hallways each day, carrying a name that was still finding its meaning, I knew one thing for certain.
Maelis Elara Whitmore had become a chapter in my life, whether I was ready to write it or not.
