Episode 4 – The First Move of War

The palace woke beneath a sky heavy with rain.

Dark clouds clung low over the imperial towers, mirroring the tension coiling in my chest. Lyra’s warning… no, her threat… still echoed in my thoughts. The anonymous letter had been clear enough. She would not retreat. She would only sharpen her claws.

Fine.

If this was war, then I would choose the battlefield.

By midmorning, I was summoned to the eastern gardens under the pretense of a “peace gathering” hosted by the noble ladies. In the original story, this was where Elara lost her temper publicly after being subtly provoked… earning the Emperor’s disfavor.

I would not repeat her mistake.

The gardens bloomed with artificial beauty, carefully cultivated and painfully deceptive. Noblewomen clustered together in silk and jewels, their laughter brittle. When I arrived, conversations faltered.

Lyra stood at the center, radiant in white.

“Elara,” she greeted warmly. “I’m so glad you could join us.”

I inclined my head politely. “I wouldn’t miss it.”

As we took our seats, tea was served. The air smelled faintly of jasmine. Too sweet. Too deliberate.

Lyra gestured toward me. “Lady Elara has been through so much recently. It must be difficult, bearing such… scrutiny.”

A trap.

I smiled. “On the contrary. Scrutiny encourages honesty.”

Several nobles shifted uncomfortably.

Lyra’s eyes gleamed. “How admirable. Still, rumors can destroy a woman’s reputation… even when they’re unfounded.”

“Only when she has no defense,” I replied smoothly. “Fortunately, the truth is persistent.”

The conversation stalled. Lyra studied me carefully, reassessing.

Then she struck.

“Speaking of truth,” she said lightly, “did you know the eastern storage wing was sealed last night due to a magical anomaly?”

I stilled.

That wing held ancient artifacts… unstable ones. In the original timeline, Elara was blamed for triggering a magical surge there. A surge that injured several servants.

My gaze hardened. “I wasn’t aware.”

“How strange,” Lyra murmured. “You were seen nearby.”

Murmurs erupted.

I rose slowly to my feet.

“Is that so?” I asked calmly. “Then I welcome an investigation.”

Lyra blinked. She hadn’t expected that.

“After all,” I continued, “Duke Ardyn has already proven how easily false accusations can be uncovered.”

The name carried weight.

As if summoned, thunder cracked overhead… and footsteps followed.

Kael emerged from the garden archway, rain clinging to his dark cloak. His golden eyes swept the gathering before settling on Lyra.

“I was informed of a disturbance,” he said coldly.

Lyra stood. “Duke Ardyn, we were merely discussing…”

“The anomaly,” he cut in. “Yes. I’m aware.”

My heart steadied.

“Lady Elara is not responsible,” Kael continued. “The surge originated from a sealed relic. One that required authorization to access.”

Silence fell like a blade.

Lyra paled… just slightly.

Kael’s gaze sharpened. “Only three people hold that authorization.”

He didn’t name them.

He didn’t have to.

The gathering dissolved quickly after that. Nobles fled, whispers trailing behind them like smoke. Lyra excused herself with practiced grace, but her composure was cracked.

I watched her go.

That was her second move.

And her second failure.

That night, Kael summoned me… not to a council chamber, but to the old magic observatory. A dangerous choice. A private one.

“You’re provoking her,” he said without preamble.

“Yes,” I agreed. “Because she’s careless when cornered.”

“You’re playing a dangerous game.”

“I was born into one.”

He turned to face me, eyes dark. “You’re forcing my hand.”

I stepped closer. “Then stop pretending you’re neutral.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t trust me,” he said.

“No,” I replied honestly. “But I don’t fear you either.”

That surprised him.

Magic pulsed faintly between us, responding to tension neither of us acknowledged.

“Train with me,” Kael said suddenly.

I blinked. “What?”

“Your magic is unstable,” he continued. “If you lose control, you’ll be blamed… no matter the truth.”

“And you’d protect me?” I asked softly.

“I’d contain you,” he corrected.

I smiled. “That’s honesty.”

After a moment, I nodded. “Very well.”

The first training session nearly destroyed the observatory.

My mana surged violently, cracking the stone floor beneath my feet. Kael reacted instantly, erecting a barrier just in time. His expression shifted… not to fear, but awe.

“You’re a catalyst,” he said quietly. “No wonder they feared you.”

“I fear myself,” I admitted.

He stepped closer, placing a hand over mine, steadying the flow. The contact sent a jolt through both of us… magic aligning, resonating.

“Breathe,” he murmured. “Control comes with trust.”

I met his gaze. “Careful, Duke. That sounds like advice.”

Something dangerous sparked between us.

When the session ended, I was exhausted… but alive. Stronger.

As I returned to my chamber, another letter awaited me.

This one bore a crest.

Lyra’s.

If you insist on standing in my way, it read, then I’ll remove everything you care about.

I folded the letter calmly.

She thought she knew my weakness.

She was wrong.

Because I had already lost everything once.

And this time…

I would take her world first.

I didn’t sleep that night.

Lyra’s letter lay folded on the table, untouched, yet heavy enough to weigh down the entire room. She wasn’t bluffing. In the original story, this was where she began eliminating obstacles quietly… maids dismissed, allies disgraced, families ruined overnight.

I paced the chamber, mind racing.

Who would she target first?

The answer came sooner than expected.

At dawn, frantic knocking echoed through my door. One of my personal maids burst in, face pale and shaking.

“Lady Elara,” she gasped. “The head gardener… he’s been arrested. They say he was caught stealing relic fragments.”

My blood ran cold.

The gardener had been loyal to my family for decades. In the original timeline, he had been executed without trial… used as proof of my “corruption.”

So this was Lyra’s move.

“Where is he?” I demanded.

“Dungeon level three,” the maid whispered. “But the order came from the palace.”

From Lyra’s influence.

I clenched my fists. Rage flared, hot and sharp… but I forced it down. Recklessness would cost lives.

Instead, I turned and pulled on my cloak.

If Lyra wanted to attack through others, then she had underestimated how far I was willing to go.

I would not beg.

I would not plead.

And I would not fight alone.

As I stepped into the corridor, I nearly collided with Kael.

His gaze swept over me instantly, assessing. “You heard.”

“Yes,” I said tightly.

“I’ve already suspended the execution order,” he continued. “Temporarily.”

Relief surged.. brief, dangerous.

“You shouldn’t have,” I said.

His jaw tightened. “I know.”

We stared at each other, tension crackling.

“You’re crossing a line for me,” I said quietly.

“So are you,” he replied. “And yet here we are.”

For the first time, I saw something raw in his eyes… not duty, not strategy, but resolve.

“From this moment on,” Kael said, voice low, “any move against your people is a move against me.”

I studied him carefully. “Do you realize what that means?”

“Yes,” he answered without hesitation.

Slowly, deliberately, I nodded.

“Then be prepared, Duke Ardyn,” I said. “Because she won’t forgive you.”

He gave a grim smile. “Neither will I.”

Somewhere in the palace, a heroine tightened her grip on power.

And somewhere deeper, the villainess gained something far more dangerous than magic.

An ally.
