Chapter 4: The White Snake's Counsel

By the time Yue Xin reached her inn, her legs were trembling. She sank onto the wooden bench, letting out a shaky breath.

“Player: emotional spike detected. Recommended action: rest and reassess,” the System said in its usual calm tone.

A soft, whispering hiss made her glance down. On the floor, a slender, snow-white snake with glimmering sapphire eyes uncoiled itself gracefully. Its scales gleamed in the dim lantern light, reflecting tiny flashes like starlight.

“Hello! Don’t be startled! I am still the Tiān Jī System,” the snake said in a cheerful, lilting voice.

“Thought I’d make myself a bit… more personable. And yes, everyone can see me.”

Yue Xin blinked. “I… I can see you?”

“Of course! And don’t worry—my bite is strictly metaphorical,” it said with a flick of its tongue.

“Cute, mystical, and functional. That’s me.”

Yue Xin laughed softly, her tension easing. Tentatively, she held out her hand. The snake slithered smoothly onto her wrist, coiling itself gently around her hand. It was surprisingly light, warm, and oddly comforting.

“Player, now that we’re comfortable, let’s review today,” the snake said, curling itself neatly in a spiral around her hand.

“We’ll go over General Zhen Wu’s movements, gestures, and patterns. But first… pet me, stroke me, whatever you need. It helps stabilize your emotional state.”

Yue Xin’s fingers brushed along the silky scales, and she smiled softly. “You… actually make this a little less terrifying.”

“I aim to please,” the white snake said, flicking its tongue playfully.

“But don’t get too comfortable—survival comes first. Tomorrow, your first mission begins. I’ll guide you every step of the way.”

The snake tightened slightly around her wrist, like a protective bracelet, and Yue Xin realized something: its presence wasn’t just comforting—it made her feel powerful, observed, and ready. And the fact that anyone walking by could see this elegant white snake wrapped around her hand gave her an odd sense of confidence. She wasn’t just a stranger in this world anymore—she was Lin Yue Xin, the girl with the white snake companion.

“I guess… this is okay,” she whispered, stroking its scales gently.

“Just… promise you won’t bite me.”

“Bite? Me? Never!” it said, coiling more tightly around her wrist with a faint sparkle in its eyes.

“We’re partners, Player. Always. And don’t worry, everyone can see me. Makes a statement, don’t you think?”

Yue Xin laughed quietly, leaning back against the bench. Somehow, having the white snake coiled around her hand made her feel less alone, less afraid—and ready to face whatever the dangerous, mysterious world of General Zhen Wu had in store.

The night passed quietly, but she knew tomorrow, her first real mission and true test would begin. And she wouldn’t face it alone.

The first light of morning filtered softly through the paper windows. A cheerful voice called from the hallway:

“Lin Yue Xin! Breakfast is ready! Come eat with the family!”

Yue Xin stretched and smiled as she stepped into the common room. The warm, fragrant aroma of steaming rice, fresh vegetables, and sweet tea filled the air. Her own family—her father, mother, and younger siblings—were already gathered around the low wooden table, smiling warmly at her.

“Good morning, my dear! Sleep well?” her mother asked, placing a small bowl of congee in front of her.

Her father ruffled her hair lightly, chuckling. “You’ve grown stronger, Yue Xin. Eat well, tomorrow will be a long day.”

Even her younger siblings giggled and waved, eager to share food and chatter. Yue Xin’s heart swelled. I’m so lucky… they really love me.

The white snake remained coiled around her wrist, shimmering faintly in the morning light. It flicked its tongue curiously at the food, making Yue Xin laugh softly. “Don’t even think about taking my breakfast,” she whispered.

“Player: emotional state stabilized. Presence of family provides security and positive reinforcement. Use opportunity to rest and prepare for mission,” the snake advised.

Yue Xin nodded, smiling genuinely as she joined her family. For a few peaceful minutes, she simply ate, laughed, and felt warmth, forgetting the dangers of the city and the intimidating General Zhen Wu.

And yet, she knew the calm wouldn’t last. Tomorrow, her first real test awaited
