Night came too quickly.
Evan sat alone in his office, lights dimmed, the city glowing faintly through the glass walls. His jacket lay discarded on the couch. His tie was loose.
Control was slipping.
His body felt unbearably warm now, heat pooling beneath his skin in slow, dangerous waves. Every breath carried the faint sweetness of his own pheromones—muted, restrained, but struggling to stay hidden.
This is bad.
Evan pressed his palm to his chest, fingers trembling.
He had endured heats before. Prepared for them. Controlled them.
But this one was different.
Because it had been triggered.
By an alpha who didn’t dominate.
Didn’t force.
Didn’t take.
An alpha who had stepped back when Evan said no.
That thought alone made his omega ache.
“Focus,” Evan whispered. “Just… focus.”
But his suppressants burned now, a dull sting beneath his skin—a warning that they were losing the fight.
Outside the office, Lucas still hadn’t left.
He leaned against the wall across the hall, phone dark in his hand, senses tuned outward.
The air was changing.
Sweetness lingered faintly—soft, distressed, restrained.
Omega.
Lucas’s jaw tightened as his alpha instincts stirred again, deeper this time.
Not hunger.
Concern.
Protection.
He had sensed it clearly now. Evan wasn’t just unwell—he was fighting his own body.
Lucas exhaled slowly, grounding himself.
Don’t overwhelm him.
He had no right to interfere.
And yet…
The idea of Evan suffering alone twisted something in his chest.
Lucas knocked once. Lightly.
“Evan,” he said quietly, voice low and calm. “It’s Lucas.”
Silence.
Then—movement.
The door unlocked.
Evan stood there, pale, eyes glassy with strain, posture still proud but fragile beneath it.
“What do you want?” Evan asked, voice steady by force alone.
Lucas met his gaze, not pushing, not stepping closer.
“You don’t look okay,” he said gently. “I wanted to make sure you’re safe.”
Evan laughed weakly. “Since when does my safety concern you?”
Lucas didn’t answer immediately.
“Since I noticed you shaking,” he said simply.
The honesty disarmed Evan more than anger ever could.
He turned away, letting the door remain open.
Lucas took that as permission.
Inside, the room felt heavy with tension and restraint.
Lucas stayed near the door. Distance. Respect.
“You don’t have to stay,” Evan muttered, sitting down slowly.
“I know,” Lucas replied. “I’ll leave if you ask.”
Evan closed his eyes.
Why was this harder than being alone?
The warmth surged again—stronger this time. His breath hitched.
Lucas noticed instantly.
“Is it… Getting worse?” he asked softly.
Evan nodded once.
“I won’t touch you,” Lucas said immediately. “I won’t cross any line. I just—” He paused. “I don’t want you to go through this by yourself.”
The words settled gently between them.
Not a claim.
Not a demand.
An offer.
Evan swallowed, emotion tightening his throat.
“…Stay,” he whispered. “Just… don’t come closer.”
Lucas nodded. “I’ll stay.”
And he did.
Quiet. Still. Guarding the space like a promise.
As Evan struggled to breathe through the rising heat, one thought kept returning—dangerous and unwanted, yet comforting all the same.
If I lose control…
He won’t hurt me.
And that scared Evan more than anything else.
