Chapter 5:

CHAPTER 5: Rin Voss | Part 2

Rin Voss Pov – After School, 4:17 PM

The bell dies out, students pouring into the halls in noisy waves. I take my time packing – empty corridors are easier to move through. That’s when she fumbles her book, a page peeling free and drifting toward a puddle by the door.

I catch it before it hits the water.

“Here.”

She grins, tucking the page back in place. “Thanks! I swear, I’m starting to actually understand how mana circulates now.”

“The advanced textbook has clearer diagrams,” I say – an observation, nothing more. “It’s on the third shelf, left side of the reference section.”

“Really? I’ve been looking everywhere for something that makes sense.” She slings her bag over her shoulder. “Maybe I’ll check it out tomorrow after training.”

I pause for half a second. “I’ll be there anyway. Can point it out if you want.”

“Sweet!” She’s gone before I can say more, already laughing with someone as they head down the hall. I stand there a moment, then shake my head – helpfulness is a useful tool, that’s all. No need to read into it.

I make my way to the third-floor storage room – heavy steel door, no signs, hidden behind old equipment. They’re waiting when I push inside.

“Thought you’d bailed,” the lean one says, barely glancing up from cleaning his gear. He melts into shadows better than anyone I know.

“Had loose ends to tie up.” I nod toward the wall – maps pinned up, red strings weaving between locations that mean trouble. “Everyone here?”

“All present,” the one at the table says, screen glowing against her face. She finds things that don’t want to be found.

The third stands by the window, sharpening a blade with slow, deliberate movements. Her eyes cut to me as I approach. “Distracted today.”

“Just paying attention to details.” I spread new files across the table – black and white photos, energy readings that twist like smoke. “They’ve accelerated. Three sites in a month. All high-mana locations.”

“Pattern holds,” the lean one notes, tracing a finger across the map. “Next target’s obvious – the university research wing.”

“Shell company’s name is Apex,” the tech says, fingers flying over keys. “Registered to a man who died five years ago. Clean cover.”

“Modified mana signature at every site,” the blade-wielder adds, running her thumb along the edge of her weapon. “Something new. Not amateur work.”

I fold my arms, studying the web of strings on the wall. “Kai – keep eyes on the university. Lena – pull every thread you can on Apex. Maya – prep surveillance gear and be ready for anything. I’ll track that signature.”

They move without a word – each knows their role, trust earned through survival alone.

“Rin,” Maya says as she passes me at the door. Her voice is flat, warning. “Stay focused. We can’t afford mistakes.”

I nod – she’s right. Every distraction is a vulnerability. But as I head toward the library to grab that textbook first – just in case she asks – I admit to myself that she’s… interesting. A variable in the pattern. Worth watching.

Shadows stretch long down the empty halls. They always do. But variables can be useful too.
