The Mansion

The Mansion

Entrance

Rain pounded against the window and the thunder roared. I simply just sat at my desk with unfinished paperwork.

I could feel Winter, my husky, licking my hand. Gently, I pulled it away and started scratching behind her ear.

Suddenly, the office door creaked open. When I turn around to look, a pair of twins with matching white hair, then two boys that were both dripping wet from the rain and seemed to stay close together, and finally a grumpy looking old man.

They all stared at me in silence.

And I stared back.

"May I help you?" I asked calmly, not bothering to get up from my chair.

One of the two boys, the older one with half blue and half black hair, spoke up first, shaking his head almost apologeticly. "No ma'am. Please forgive us for coming in unannounced. We ju-"

I raise my hand to cut him off, clearly not caring for his excuse. "You don't have to explain. But how exactly did you find this place?"

Then the twins spoke up. "Me and my sister were exploring. We honestly thought this mansion was abandoned."

The twin with the longer white hair replied, as she crossed her arms and shifted her weight from one foot to the other, seemingly uncomfortable. I take note of how the other twin sister with the black hair remained silent.

The other boy, the younger one holding a camera, spoke up. "We were trying to get our camera back from the dog right there and it led us here."

He nodded his head towards Winter who looked up at me with a slightly tilted head as if trying to act innocent and not in the wrong of anything.

I looked back at the old man, waiting for his own response.

"Lost." The old man said bluntly. I narrowed my eyes in slight annoyance at his bluntness.

At least the others were at the very least respectful.

A moment of silence passes between all of us. Uncomfortable... Awkward. Finally, I clear my throat and speak again.

"You two, I have extra towels in my bathroom. Use them to dry off." I tell the two boys almost impatiently. Before turning to the twins.

"I suppose, if you two are still bored and need something to do, you may keep exploring my place but don't touch anything." I warn.

Finally, I look over at the grumpy old man, rolling my eyes as he mumbled something under his breath about 'youngings' and 'no respect'

"You, I guess, can do whatever you want. But you get the same warning as them." I nod to the twins before continuing. "Don't break anything."

The old man mumbled something inaudible again, and I watch silently as they all leave the room. I sigh heavily.

Winter barks, getting up on her back legs and putting her front legs on my lap. I stare at her with a slightly raised brow.

After a second, I start to pet Winter, rubbing behind her ears while her tail wags excitedly behind her, hitting the leg of my chair.

Suddenly, Winter starts to get up onto my lap.

"Winter, no!" I exclaim, but she already jumped up, pushing me back and causing us both to fall to the ground with a thump.

I sigh heavily as Winter begins to lick my face as if to apologize.
