THE SEAT THAT WASN'T EMPTY ~

The next morning felt strangely normal.

Aarav walked into Class 9–C at the same pace as always, his bag slung over one shoulder, the hallway still buzzing with half-awake students. For a second, he stood near the door, scanning the room without really meaning to.

The last bench by the window was empty.

He walked to it and sat down, dropping his bag underneath. The sunlight through the window fell across the desk the same way it always did, making thin lines across the wood.

But today, it didn’t feel quite the same.

Two rows ahead, Ananya was already there.

She wasn’t alone.

Kabir sat beside her, leaning back in his chair like he owned the place. He was saying something that made Ananya laugh—one of those quick, unexpected laughs she usually tried to hide during class.

Aarav looked away quickly.

It’s just a seat, he told himself.

Class started. Chalk dust floated lazily in the air as the teacher began explaining something from the textbook. Aarav tried to focus on the board, but every now and then he caught a glimpse of movement two rows ahead.

Kabir passing Ananya a pen.

Ananya whispering something back.

Kabir grinning.

None of it meant anything. Aarav knew that. Still, his pen paused on the page more often than usual.

During the short break, Kabir turned around suddenly.

“Hey,” he said to Aarav. “You’re Aarav, right?”

Aarav blinked. “Yeah.”

“I’ve seen you around,” Kabir continued easily. “You’re good at chemistry, aren’t you?”

“Not really.”

Kabir laughed. “Ananya says you helped her with bases yesterday.”

Aarav glanced forward. Ananya looked slightly annoyed.

“I just explained one thing,” Aarav said.

“Well,” Kabir said, shrugging, “that’s still more than I understand.”

Before Aarav could reply, Kabir stood up to grab something from his bag. As he walked past the last bench, he tapped the desk casually.

“Nice spot back here,” he said. “Good view of the playground.”

Aarav didn’t answer.

The break ended quickly, but the strange feeling didn’t.

By lunchtime, Aarav found himself outside near the basketball court, pretending to watch a game while his thoughts kept wandering back to the classroom.

Why does it matter? he wondered.

It shouldn’t.

But when he walked back into class later, he noticed something small.

Ananya’s bag wasn’t on the second bench anymore.

It was on the last bench.

Right beside his.

She walked in a moment later, carrying two notebooks.

“You moved?” he asked.

She nodded, sitting down like nothing unusual had happened. “Kabir talks too much.”

Aarav raised an eyebrow. “You noticed that today?”

She nudged his arm lightly. “Don’t start.”

For the first time since morning, the bench felt normal again.

Classes passed more easily after that. At one point, Ananya leaned over his notebook to check a diagram. At another, Aarav borrowed her ruler without asking.

The quiet rhythm returned.

When the final bell rang, students rushed out of the room as usual.

Ananya stayed seated for a moment, flipping her pen between her fingers.

“You looked annoyed today,” she said suddenly.

“I wasn’t.”

She gave him a look that clearly said she didn’t believe that.

“You were,” she insisted.

“Maybe a little,” he admitted.

“Why?”

Aarav hesitated. “No reason.”

She waited.

He didn’t say anything else.

After a second, Ananya sighed softly and stood up.

“Fine,” she said. “Keep your secrets.”

She picked up her bag and walked toward the door. Just before leaving, she turned slightly.

“Oh, by the way,” she added casually, “Kabir asked if we wanted to join his group for the chemistry presentation tomorrow.”

Aarav frowned. “Us?”

“Yeah.”

She paused, watching his reaction.

“I said I’d ask you first.”

And with that, she stepped out of the classroom, leaving Aarav alone with the question echoing in his head.

He looked at the empty doorway, then at the bench beside him.

For the first time all day, he wasn’t sure what answer he was going to give.

And for some reason, it felt like the wrong one might change everything.
