Fun Lane

Fun Lane

A normal day on fun lane

Fun Lane was loud before the sun even showed up.

Skateboards clattered on sidewalks. Someone’s music was way too loud. Buddy the dog barked at literally nothing, like usual.

Jay stood on his porch, squinting down the street.

“Today feels weird,” he said.

Mila rolled her eyes. “You say that every day.”

Zay didn’t look up from his game. “If nothing explodes, it’s a good day.”

Nova laughed. “Watch. Now something will explode.”

That’s when the streetlights flickered.

Not off.

Not on.

They flickered purple.

Everyone froze.

Buddy stopped barking.

The air felt warm… like the world was holding its breath.

Jay’s hands started glowing.

Mila felt her heart beat louder than it ever had.

Zay’s phone shut off by itself.

Nova smiled.

“Oh,” she said.

“This is definitely not normal.”

And Fun Lane would never be the same again.

Jay stared at his hands.

They were still glowing.

Not bright like a flashlight—more like soft fireflies trapped under his skin.

“Okay,” he said slowly, “everyone stay calm.”

Nova snorted. “You’re glowing, Jay. I think calm already left.”

Mila grabbed Jay’s wrist. “Does it hurt?”

Jay shook his head. “No… it actually feels kinda warm. Like I just ran really fast.”

Zay finally looked up from his phone—then dropped it.

“NOPE,” he said. “That’s not normal. Phones don’t just shut off, and people don’t turn into glow sticks.”

Buddy whimpered and ran in a small circle, then stopped and stared straight down the street.

“Buddy?” Mila asked. “What are you looking at?”

At the end of Fun Lane, near the old empty lot, the air shimmered.

Like heat waves.

Like something invisible was there.

Nova’s eyes lit up. “You guys see that too, right?”

Before anyone could answer, the streetlights flickered again.

Purple.

Then—BOOM.

A loud crack echoed through the lane, and the kids ducked.

When they looked back up, the empty lot wasn’t empty anymore.

A strange machine sat in the middle of it—metal, glowing lines, humming softly like it was alive.

Zay whispered, “Please tell me this is a prank.”

Jay swallowed. “Who would prank us with… that?”

Mila felt a weird pull in her chest, like the machine was calling her name.

“I think,” she said quietly, “we’re supposed to go over there.”

Everyone turned to her.

“Excuse me?” Zay said. “Supposed by WHO?”

Nova was already walking forward. “By fate. Or curiosity. Same thing.”

Jay hesitated—then nodded. “We don’t split up.”

Buddy barked once, like he agreed.

As they stepped closer, the machine reacted.

Lights flared.

The ground vibrated.

And suddenly—

WHOOSH.

A wave of energy burst outward, throwing them back.

Jay hit the grass.

Mila’s ears rang.

Zay felt like electricity ran through his bones.

Nova laughed.

Actually laughed.

“That,” she said, standing up, “was AWESOME.”

Jay sat up, heart pounding.

“Guys,” he said slowly, “I think something just changed us.”

Behind them, Fun Lane was quiet.

Too quiet.

And none of them noticed the shadow watching from the rooftops above.
