Why not Him?

The days passed like these, Jungkook still could feel the distance between him and his friend growing. But he could see his friend looked happy and even glowing, so he felt at peace. He was happy for his friend.

He talked with him, joked with him, but something about the way he talked and laughed didn't match the older one. Jungkook knew people change, we all do, so he said to himself that it wasn't a big deal. But still, something in him told him it wasn't the same as before, and that hurt him.

He didn't know how to explain this. He knew if he confronted his friend again, he would scold him, maybe even harsher than before, and he didn't want that. He couldn't bear the thought of getting scolded by him, so he would stay quiet every time.

"Kooks, are you ok? What are you thinking?" Jungkook turned to see his friend looking worried. He gave a reassuring smile and said, "Nothing." His friend sighed at him.

"You are not attentive nowadays, Kook. You changed a lot," he shrugged.

'Changed? Me?' Jungkook thought to himself but didn't voice it out.

Jungkook saw his friend taking a deep breath. "Kooks, I want to tell you something, but not now. I'll do it after our graduation. Shall we go to the café? Our favourite one? Let's have a talk. I was waiting to tell you about this but didn't know how to, so let's talk, ok?" his friend said, scratching his neck. If Jungkook didn't mistake, he could see a faint blush too.

Jungkook's heart raced at the words. He could feel heat rushing to his cheeks. 'What if he wants to confess too?' he thought to himself. And the thought alone made him go insane. He couldn't wait for that to happen—to see them as a couple. He blushed again.

"W-well, I-I too have something to tell you," Jungkook started.

"Oh well, what is it?" he asked back, to which Jungkook just played with his sweater paws. He looked nervous; anyone could tell that.

"I-I will t-tell you on that day too," Jungkook said, looking down. His friend smiled at his cuteness. "You are cute," he chuckled, ruffling his hair. Well, Jungkook looked like a whole tomato right now. He just hoped everything would go well, how he dreamed of.

It's the D-day finally, their graduation day. The day Jungkook was going to confess, and his friend was going to confess to him too. Well, that's what he thought, and he really hoped his dream would come true. He had seen the change in his friend, how protective and possessive his friend could become when it came to him, so he was sure he would reciprocate his feelings.

But he didn't want to decide by himself. He wanted to hear it from his friend before confirming anything. He took a deep breath, got ready for the day, and went down to see his parents ready too. They all went to his university.

The graduation went well. Every friend greeted each other, took photos with each other. Jungkook took photos with his parents and friends. He saw his friend in the morning, they wished each other, and also took a photo together, but he didn't know where he went. He was searching for him when Sara saw him.

"Kooks, what happened?"

"Ahh, where is he? We planned to go to the café together."

"Café?" Sara questioned. "But I saw him leaving early."

"He left? But why didn't he call me?" Jungkook pouted. Sara chuckled. "Aww Kookie, don't worry. He might have got an urgent work. Call him and talk, ok? What if he's preparing something?" she smirked, and Jungkook blushed.

"S-shut up," he heard a buzzing sound. He took his phone to see a message from his friend.

"Kooks, something came up. Can you come straight to the café? I'll wait there."

Jungkook smiled at the message. He sent a quick 'ok' before keeping his phone back in his pocket. Sara looked at him, smirking. "Oh well, who is it? Your future boyfriend?" she smirked. Jungkook blushed.

"Saraaaaaa," he whined, and Sara laughed at him. "Ok ok, just go now, ok? I'll call you at night to know the tea," she smirked, and Jungkook just shook his head, blushing.

Jungkook reached the café.

"Kooks, here!" he turned to see his friend calling him. He smiled widely seeing his friend. He jumped and got there. His friend chuckled at his reaction. "Come on, have a seat hm?" he told, to which Jungkook nodded.

"What do you want, Kook? Tell me and take it as my treat," he said, to which Jungkook smiled at him.

"What's the occasion, sir?" Jungkook asked playfully.

"Oh, it's nothing, just being generous, you know, for a wonderful friend like you?" his friend played along, and Jungkook giggled at that. He didn't know why, but he felt happy.

They ordered and chatted until their order came. Jungkook felt this conversation was real, like how it was before, and he felt really happy. While they were talking, Jungkook noticed his friend looking at his phone and messaging someone.

"What happened?" Jungkook asked.

"Ahh, you'll know. Wait," he replied. Then he saw his friend looking at someone, motioning toward their way. He saw a big smile on his face, like literally his friend was glowing—the smile he knew too well, the smile that came from his heart, the one he missed recently. And something, something in him snapped. That sudden nauseous feeling people get, he felt a sudden pain in his heart, and he didn't know why. He felt something was wrong.

His thoughts were disturbed when his friend called someone. "Here!" he then finally turned. What he saw made him question his choices again. Lots of thoughts started echoing in his head, lots of questions that he didn't know the answers to, but he knew one thing for sure, that none of them were good for his everything.

Jungkook saw a girl, looked the same age as them. She was beautiful, very beautiful in Jungkook's eyes. Her long hair looked smooth, she had big eyes, and her bangs falling over them made her look even prettier. And something in Jungkook snapped—it was over.

"Kook," his friend's call made him come out of his trance. He turned to see his friend smiling at him, the girl too, now seated next to his friend. Both smiled at him, a smile that pained Jungkook. He knew, he knew too well what this was. He didn't want to create fake scenarios. Something in him told him it was over.

"Kooks," his friend started slowly. "Meet Jia, my girlfriend."

Well, that hit him. He had always heard of heartbreaks in stories and seen them in dramas. He thought it was just pain or sadness, but no—now that he thought about it, he realised it was way more than that. He felt numb. He couldn't move. He couldn't speak. It felt like his throat was being held by someone, tight enough so he couldn't speak, to be precise, like he shouldn't speak.

His heart....it felt like someone had squished it, like he couldn't feel how it worked. He could feel his heart trying to say something to him, but he didn't know what it was. His body? He couldn't feel it. He couldn't even lift himself. In total, he couldn't react.

"Kooks?" he came out of his thoughts when his friend called him. His eyes started to tear up, but he tried to mask his feelings. He smiled at them. He saw now his friend holding her hand—maybe hereafter, it was hers to hold, not his. And then it hit him. It was over. Everything.

"I know you might feel it's sudden, but I just wanted to surprise you. Don't take me wrong, ok?" he said softly. Soft? Jungkook knew his friend had stopped talking to him in that tone a long time ago, then what happened now?

But Jungkook didn't voice out anything. He just smiled. "W-when? I-I mean, when did you two meet?" his voice broke at first, but he wanted to know when everything happened. Why did he never notice? Never know?

"Ahh!! that," Jungkook could see his friend shying. This time he didn't like it; he felt hurt and irritated, maybe because he was a human too.

"Ah, that, I was the one who asked him for a date. I never thought he would accept it, but I'm glad he did," the girl—if Jungkook was not wrong, Jia—told him. All he could feel was pain. No, he wasn't angry at her but at himself for being a fool—a fool in love.

He turned towards his friend for an explanation, but he could see him tense.

"Date? When? Why didn't I know this?" Jungkook asked, masking his pain.

"Ah, as I said, Kook, I wanted it to be a surprise for you."

Jungkook "oh"ed. Surprise? What kind of surprise is this? It was a heartbreak for him. It might be a memorable day for both him and his friend, but in different ways.

He just smiled at them both and stood up. No, he couldn't be here anymore. No way. He would end up crying, making things worse. He didn't want to ruin his friend's love life.

"Kook, why did you get up? You told me there's something you wanted to tell me too?"

"Ah, that....it doesn't matter anymore. Enjoy your date. I remembered something important came up. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Bye!" saying this, Jungkook turned on his heels and walked away. While moving out, he could feel his tears make their way through his eyes. He didn't try to stop them because he knew there was no use, so he didn't stop and walked away.

Far away from the café. Far away from "him".

All his way back home, he could think only one thing.
