Whispers Along the Hallway
San Isidro National High School always felt alive during the day.
Students filled the corridors with laughter, gossip, and the familiar sound of slippers dragging against the cement floor. Teachers shouted reminders, vendors waited outside the gates, and the bell dictated everyone’s life down to the last second.
But that afternoon, something felt… off.
I noticed it the moment the clock above the blackboard ticked past 5:30 PM.
“Dismissed!” our teacher announced, her voice tired as she gathered her things.
Chairs screeched. Bags were zipped. Everyone rushed out like the building itself was chasing them away.
Everyone—except me.
“Mae, hindi ka pa uuwi?” Janelle asked, stopping by my desk. My best friend had that worried look again, the one she always wore whenever I stayed late.
“I just need to finish the attendance report,” I said, holding up the thick notebook. “Promise, mabilis lang.”
She glanced at the darkening windows. “Alam mo naman ang mga chismis dito.”
I laughed, trying to sound brave. “Chismis lang ‘yon.”
She didn’t laugh back.
“Text mo ako pag nakauwi ka na,” she said before finally leaving.
When the classroom door closed behind her, the silence felt heavy.
Too heavy.
I finished my task quickly, my pen scratching loudly against the paper. The sound echoed in the empty room, making my chest tighten. When I finally stood up, I checked the clock again.
6:02 PM.
“Great,” I muttered.
The hallway outside was dim, lit only by flickering fluorescent lights. The bulletin boards looked like shadows of themselves, and the wind pushed softly through the open windows, carrying the distant sound of dogs barking outside the campus.
I stepped out.
My footsteps echoed as I walked, each sound bouncing back at me like someone else was following. I tried to ignore it. I told myself it was normal.
Until I stopped walking—
And the footsteps didn’t.
Tap.
My heart skipped.
I turned around.
Nothing.
I swallowed hard and kept moving faster, my grip tightening around my bag strap. That’s when I saw her.
At the far end of the hallway stood a girl in our school uniform. Her hair was long and messy, covering her face. She wasn’t moving.
“Uy,” I called nervously. “Sarado na ang school.”
No response.
The lights flickered violently.
When they steadied again—
She was closer.
My breath caught in my throat. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t scream.
Then, slowly, she raised her head.
Her face was pale. Her eyes were dark and empty.
And her uniform—
It was old.
Not the one we wore now.
Suddenly, the bell rang.
A loud, sharp sound that echoed through the halls.
I blinked—
And she was gone.
I ran.
Down the stairs, past empty classrooms, past the guard’s post that was strangely unmanned. I didn’t stop until I was outside the gate, gasping for air like I had been drowning.
That night, I barely slept.
The next morning, during homeroom, our adviser spoke in a serious tone.
“Students,” she said, “do not stay late in the school without permission. Especially near the old third floor.”
The class grew quiet.
“That area,” she continued, “is where a student disappeared ten years ago.”
My hands turned cold.
Because I knew one thing for sure—
The girl I saw last night?
She didn’t disappear.
She was still here.
And somehow… she chose me.
To be continued…
