things that never made sense

Chuuya Nakahara didn’t sleep.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw it again—

Dazai kneeling beside him, hands shaking, fear naked and unguarded.

You’re panicking.

The memory made his chest tighten.

“That idiot…” Chuuya muttered, staring at the ceiling of his room at Port Mafia headquarters. “Since when do you look like that?”

Dazai Osamu was supposed to be untouchable. Always joking. Always distant. Always in control.

And yet—

That look hadn’t been an act.

Morning – Port Mafia Headquarters

Chuuya trained harder than usual.

Each punch cracked the air. Gravity surged violently around him, warping the floor beneath his boots. Sweat dripped down his jaw, but he didn’t stop.

“Executive Nakahara,” a subordinate called nervously, “you’ll damage the training hall—”

“Then rebuild it,” Chuuya snapped.

His thoughts refused to settle.

Why did he come back now?

Why protect me?

Why look afraid when I was hurt?

None of it added up.

A Memory He Never Questioned

The smell of alcohol and gunpowder.

Chuuya remembered slumping against a wall after a mission gone wrong, blood seeping through his glove.

Dazai had crouched beside him silently.

“You’re bleeding,” Dazai said.

“So?” Chuuya scoffed. “I’ve had worse.”

Dazai tore a strip of bandage with his teeth and wrapped Chuuya’s hand carefully. Too carefully.

“…You don’t have to do that,” Chuuya muttered.

“I know,” Dazai replied.

Back then, Chuuya had thought nothing of it.

Now, the memory felt different.

Uncomfortable.

Present – Armed Detective Agency

Dazai Osamu stared at the river.

The water flowed endlessly forward—never back. He wondered, briefly, what it would be like to let it carry him away.

“Stop brooding,” Atsushi said hesitantly. “You’re making it creepy.”

Dazai smiled faintly. “Am I?”

“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?”

Dazai didn’t answer.

Silence was safer.

Because if he admitted it—even once—it might shatter the fragile distance he had built to keep Chuuya alive.

That Night – Unexpected Encounter

Chuuya felt the presence before he saw it.

“You stalking me now?” he said flatly.

Dazai stepped out of the shadows, hands raised lazily. “Harsh. I was just… walking.”

“At Port Mafia territory?” Chuuya scoffed. “You’re bad at lying.”

Dazai chuckled. “You’re good at noticing.”

They stood a few feet apart, the space between them charged with unsaid words.

“Why do you keep saving me?” Chuuya asked suddenly.

Dazai froze.

“…What?”

“Don’t play dumb,” Chuuya snapped. “You left. You chose that. So why—every time—I’m in danger, you’re there?”

Dazai looked away.

“Habit,” he said lightly.

Chuuya stepped closer.

“No,” he said quietly. “That’s not it.”

Dazai’s jaw tightened.

The Question That Changed Everything

Chuuya’s voice dropped, rough and honest.

“Did I ever mean anything to you?”

The world seemed to stop.

Dazai didn’t laugh.

Didn’t tease.

Didn’t deflect.

For a moment, he looked… tired.

“…You still ask dangerous questions,” Dazai murmured.

Chuuya’s eyes burned. “Answer me.”

Dazai met his gaze—and looked away again.

“If I answer that,” he said softly, “you won’t forgive me.”

Chuuya’s breath caught.

“…Try me.”

But Dazai took a step back.

“Goodnight, Chuuya.”

And just like that—

He was gone.

Ending (Emotional Hook)

Chuuya stood alone under the city lights, heart pounding.

You won’t forgive me.

“…What the hell did you do,” Chuuya whispered, “that you’re so afraid to say it out loud?”

For the first time, the thought struck him clearly—

Maybe Dazai Osamu didn’t leave because he didn’t care.

Maybe—

He left because he cared too much.
