Episode 3

_Smiles and Silent Fears

In the beginning, everything still felt familiar.

Their conversations continued as if nothing had changed.

Messages arrived the same way they always had—

Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes silly, sometimes sent just to remind the other that they were there.

The distance between them seemed smaller during those moments, shrinking into something harmless, something that could be ignored for a while.

Screens carried warmth. Words carried comfort.

Yet, reality does not announce itself loudly.

It enters quietly.

It was during an ordinary conversation that his friends brought it up.

There was no confrontation, no seriousness at first—just casual remarks hidden behind laughter.

Someone mentioned how long-distance relationships rarely lasted.

Someone else joked about how easy it was to drift apart without noticing.

They didn’t tell her name, but they didn’t need to.

He laughed with them, pretending it didn’t affect him.

Outwardly, he remained the same—calm, easygoing, unbothered.

But later, when he was alone, the humor faded.

He lay awake, staring at the ceiling, replaying their words in his mind.

For the first time, he wondered whether feelings could truly stay steady when touch, presence, and shared moments were replaced by waiting and hoping.

Meanwhile, her world echoed a different tone.

Her friends were kinder with their doubts.

They spoke with optimism, telling her that distance wasn’t the end of everything.

They reminded her that people met, plans changed, and effort mattered more than proximity.

Their words were gentle, encouraging, and filled with belief.

She smiled and listened, letting their confidence strengthen her own.

But belief does not erase fear—it only quiets it.

Late at night, when conversations ended and the room grew still, questions slipped into her thoughts.

How long could feelings remain unchanged?

Would comfort eventually turn into a habit?

She didn’t want to overthink, yet sometimes the silence after a good conversation felt heavier than before.

They never spoke about these thoughts.

Instead, they chose familiarity.

They talked about their days, shared small frustrations, and laughed over simple things.

They avoided conversations that might crack what they had built.

Not because they didn’t care, but because they cared too much to risk it.

Some days, everything felt effortless.

Other days, replies took a little longer.

Not because interest was fading, but because uncertainty made them cautious.

Each of them noticed the pauses, yet neither asked about them.

They were afraid of the answers.

Neither of them was ready to step back.

Neither of them was brave enough to step forward.

What existed between them rested in a delicate balance—hope on one side, fear on the other.

It wasn’t love yet, but it wasn’t, nothing either.

It was something unspoken, something growing quietly in the spaces between conversations.

Between smiles that hid worry and silence that carried meaning, they stood still—

Waiting, wondering, and holding onto something fragile, unsure of where it would lead, but unwilling to let it go.

Her POV

Maybe her friends were right.

She felt the weight of the things he never said, even while he talked to her like nothing was wrong.

He acted normal, laughed like always—

but the silence between his words hurt more than distance ever could.

His POV

Maybe his friends were right too.

He was getting too attached, and that scared him.

He had feelings for her, but he stayed quiet, convincing himself she didn’t feel the same.

So he chose normal conversations over honesty.

And still, they talked like nothing had changed—

Hiding what they felt behind familiar words.
