the line i crossed

Rain poured relentlessly from the sky, washing blood from the streets but not from memory.

Shiki hated missions like this.

Night operations always dragged old thoughts back to the surface—too much darkness, too much silence. The city sector they were assigned to had been evacuated hours ago, yet something felt wrong. The air was thick, heavy with unease.

Jin walked ahead, alert and focused, eyes scanning every shadow.

“You’re unusually quiet,” Shiki muttered.

“Stay sharp,” Jin replied. “This area hasn’t been cleared properly.”

Shiki rolled his shoulders. “You worry too much.”

Jin didn’t answer—but he slowed his pace so Shiki walked beside him.

They didn’t notice it at first.

The trap was set perfectly.

A sudden explosion tore through the street behind them, cutting off their escape. Debris rained down as multiple hostile signatures flared to life.

“Ambush!” Jin shouted.

Enemies poured in from all directions—organized, trained, and far more dangerous than expected.

Shiki’s blood burned.

“Guess they really want us dead,” he said, flashing a grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Do not charge in,” Jin ordered. “We fight defensively.”

Shiki nodded—then immediately froze.

One enemy slipped past his guard, blade aimed straight for Jin’s blind spot.

“JIN!”

Shiki moved without thinking.

He threw himself between them, pain exploding across his side as the attack landed. The force knocked him to the ground, breath torn from his lungs.

“SHIKI!”

Jin’s shout cracked through the chaos.

Something snapped.

Jin moved faster than Shiki had ever seen—precision replaced by fury. Every strike was lethal, every movement ruthless. The remaining enemies fell quickly, scattering in terror.

When it was over, Jin dropped to his knees beside Shiki.

Blood soaked through Shiki’s uniform.

“You idiot,” Jin said harshly, hands hovering helplessly. “Why would you do that?”

Shiki tried to laugh but winced instead. “You said… don’t lose control. Figured… protecting you counts as control.”

Jin’s hands trembled.

“Don’t talk,” Jin said. “You’re losing too much blood.”

Shiki squinted up at him. “You’re shaking.”

Jin clenched his fists. “Be quiet.”

But Shiki reached out weakly and grabbed Jin’s sleeve.

“Hey,” Shiki murmured. “I crossed the line, didn’t I?”

Jin swallowed hard.

“Yes,” he said. “You did.”

Shiki smiled faintly. “Worth it.”

Jin didn’t respond.

He lifted Shiki carefully, cradling him far more gently than anyone would expect. Rain soaked them both as Jin moved through the ruined street, calling for extraction with a voice that refused to break.

Back at headquarters, the healers worked quickly.

Jin stood outside the infirmary, drenched, blood staining his hands.

If I were faster…

If I had seen it sooner…

The door finally opened.

“He’ll live,” the healer said. “But that was reckless.”

Jin bowed deeply. “It won’t happen again.”

Inside, Shiki stirred awake hours later.

Jin was there.

Sitting beside the bed.

He hadn’t left.

“You’re awake,” Jin said quietly.

Shiki blinked. “Told you… I’m hard to kill.”

Jin’s expression darkened. “You endangered yourself.”

Shiki looked at him seriously. “So did you. Every mission. Every time you step in front of others.”

“That’s my responsibility.”

“And now it’s mine too,” Shiki replied.

Jin froze.

Shiki continued, voice weak but sincere. “I won’t let you carry everything alone.”

Jin looked away.

“You crossed the line tonight,” Jin said again.

Shiki nodded. “Yeah.”

“…Thank you.”

The word was barely audible.

Shiki’s eyes widened slightly. “Did you just—”

“Rest,” Jin interrupted sharply. “That’s an order.”

But his hand rested on the bed rail, close enough to feel real.

Shiki smiled softly and closed his eyes.

As Jin watched him breathe steadily, a truth settled painfully in his chest.

This was no longer just duty.

If Shiki died—

Jin didn’t finish the thought.

Because he already knew.

The line had been crossed.

And there was no going back.
