Bound by Contract
Ava Mitchell always thought her wedding day would feel warm.
Soft music. Happy tears. A man who looked at her like she was the only person in the room.
Instead, she stood beneath a crystal chandelier that glittered like ice, surrounded by strangers who smiled like they were attending a corporate gala.
Because they were.
This wasn't a wedding.
It was a transaction.
Her father stood beside her, pale and tense inside his suit. The debt had aged him years in months. The failing company, the lawsuits, the investors pulling out _ all of it had led to this moment.
To her.
"To save us," he had said.
And the man waiting at the altar had agreed.
Dmitri Volkov.
Even from across the hall, Ava could feel his presence. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit that made him look less like a groom and more like a ruler claiming territory. His expression was unreadable, carved in calm, controlled lines.
He didn't look nervous.
He looked certain.
As if this outcome had never been in doubt.
Ava's heels clicked against marble as she walked toward him. Every step felt heavier than the last. Cameras flashed. Guests whispered. Somewhere, violins played a romantic melody that didn't belong to this moment.
When she finally reached the altar, Dimitri's gray eyes met her.
Cold.
Sharp.
Assessing.
Like she was a decision he had already calculated the outcome of.
Her chin lifted.
I am not something you own, she told herself.
The ceremony passed in a blur of vows she barely heard. Words about partnership and devotion floated through the air like they were meant for someone else's life.
Then came the ring.
Dimitri took her hand. His fingers were warm, steady, unshaking. Not the touch of a nervous groom _ the touch of a man used to control.
The ring slid onto her finger.
A perfect fit.
Of course it was. A man like him planned everything.
Their eyes met again, closer now.
"You can still walk away," she whispered, testing him.
His expression didn't change. "No," he replied quietly. "We can't."
Not you.
We.
Something about that unsettled her more.
The priest announced them husband and wife. Applause filled the hall. Dimitri's hand came to her waist as the photographer gestured them closer.
His grip wasn't rough.
But it was firm.
Claiming.
"Smile," he murmured without looking at her.
"This isn't real," she whispered back.
"It is now."
The camera flash captured a perfect image _ a powerful couple, elegant and composed.
Only they knew the truth.
This marriage wasn't built on love.
It was built on leverage.
Later, when the guests surrounded them with congratulations and champagne glasses clinked in celebration, Ava felt it for the first time.
The invisible walls closing in.
Dimitri leaned down slightly so only she could hear him.
"Don't look like a prisoner," he said smoothly. "People are watching."
Her jaw tightened. "Maybe I am one."
For the first time, something flickered in his eyes. Not anger.
Not amusement.
Something darker. Deeper.
"Then," he said softly, "you are in the most secured cage in the world."
And somehow...
That doesn't feel like comfort.
