Gio
My chest seized up and I ran to find Mia.
Shit! I'd pulled away from her and not only had she been raped — now she was pregnant.
"Who did it?! Are you seriously still refusing to say?"
I shouted at her while she sobbed.
"I can't — he's dangerous!"
"More dangerous than me?! Are you scared for me, or are you protecting him?!"
"Gio, don't say that. You're the most important person in the world to me. Of course I'm scared."
"Then tell me who it is, damn it!"
"It was Donatello Santinni!"
"What?! You're pregnant by our worst enemy's son?!"
"Yes, he's the one who did this to me. They're dangerous, and since you work for the De Luca family, if you go after him they'll kill you."
"I'm not afraid."
I turned and went hunting. That bastard wasn't getting away with this. I'd watched Mia grow up. I'd gone hungry countless times just to make sure she never went without.
Whoever hurt her was going to suffer.
It wasn't hard to find the bastard. Everyone knew he liked to hang around places of questionable reputation.
I found him at a strip club.
I didn't think twice — I smashed my fist into his face with everything I had until I left it unrecognizable.
I couldn't kill him, but I could leave a souvenir on his face he'd never forget.
"This is so you learn to never lay a hand on my sister! She's pregnant, you piece of shit! This isn't going unpunished," I shouted, shoving him away.
"That girl — Mia?" He laughed. "You're an idiot. Your sister's a whore. I loved spending the night with her. Very professional."
"Shut your mouth!"
I grabbed my blade and drove it right between his legs.
He screamed in agony and started cursing me out.
"Gio, you bastard! When the De Luca family falls, I'm gonna love torturing you to death."
I turned my back and walked out, feeling like I'd gotten my revenge.
I went back to find Mia and she rushed to bandage my busted hands.
"Gio, you actually went and provoked the Santinnis?"
"I wasn't gonna let them get away with what they did to you."
"You really risked your life for me? Gio — if it were Savanna instead of me, would you do the same?"
I stood up and pushed her back.
"Are you crazy?! That bastard would never have gotten the chance to touch Savanna."
"Do you like her?"
"I... of course I don't. But she's the Don's daughter, and Savanna doesn't go to underworld bars or clubs. She's got more sense than that."
Mia seemed a little deflated, but with things settled, I figured I'd head home. Then out of nowhere she started feeling nauseous and throwing up constantly.
I took her to the hospital and stayed by her side, supporting her through it.
By then three days had passed, and Savanna hadn't called. I started to think she really didn't care about me anymore, and I felt an uncomfortable emptiness in my chest.
But then my phone rang, and it was her. I rushed to answer, but Mia stopped me.
"Gio, don't. Just today — stay with me. I still haven't decided if I should keep this baby. Just today, don't obey her. Give me your support in this. You promised my brother, remember? You promised you'd watch out for me."
I felt torn. Savanna was my wife, and Mia was the girl who'd lost her brother because of me.
I answered the call.
"Savanna, I can't talk right now. I'm on a mission."
She was crying and begging. I wanted to ask what was wrong, but Mia grabbed my phone and hung up.
I felt guilty. I'd lied, and on top of that I'd let Mia end the call. But Savanna had the entire De Luca organization to help her through whatever was happening. Mia only had me.
So I pushed the worry aside and focused on taking care of Mia.
Savanna didn't call again, and I spent the whole day with Mia. The next morning I got a message from Ferdinando:
"Where were you when she needed you most?"
I replied:
"I was with Mia at the hospital. She's pregnant and having nausea. What happened?"
The screen showed he was typing. And typing. Every second that passed made me more tense.
Something inside me said I wasn't going to like that message.
"I thought you were a good man, but you're just an asshole. The De Luca family has fallen. Don De Luca and his wife were murdered. Savanna handled her parents' entire funeral alone, and you were off tending to your mistress's morning sickness. At least show up to pay your last respects to Don De Luca — the man who pulled you off the streets. After that, don't show your face in front of Savanna again. You've made her suffer enough."
